One of the main characters in the sitcom Parks and Recreation, Ron Swanson is a man that takes immense pride in his ability to provide for himself through hard work. He would likely agree with the Emerson's notion that self-reliance "loves not realities and creators, but names and customs", as Ron lives by his own set of rules that allow him to avoid reliance on or influence by others. Another similarity with Emerson's philosophy can be found in Ron's strong belief that one of the greatest awards is when he "has put his heart into his work and done his best", as he will not settle for work completed at less than its full potential.

This song is meant to provide reassurance to those feeling overwhelmed by the ever-changing aspects of life, by claiming, as in Emerson's essay, that everyone has the power to overcome their circumstances because if they "just take a look inside" they will discover that this power has resided within them all along.

British philosopher and feminist, Wollstonecraft published her book A Vindication of the Rights of Women in 1792, during a time in which many still believed women were not deserving of equal rights to men and thus she faced heavy criticism. However, her progressive ideas laid the groundwork for future feminist efforts and in this era may now be fully appreciated.
