After World War II, Allies partitioned the defeated Germany into a Soviet-occupied zone, an American-occupied zone, a British-occupied zone and a French-occupied zone. Berlin, the German capital city, was located deep in the Soviet zone, but it was also divided into four sections. In June 1948, the Russians–who wanted Berlin all for themselves closed all highways, railroads and canals from western-occupied Germany into western-occupied Berlin. Instead of retreating from West Berlin, however, the U.S. and its allies decided to supply their sectors of the city from the air. This effort, known as the “Berlin Airlift,” lasted for more than a year and carried more than 2.3 million tons of cargo into West Berlin.

Marshall, for whom it was named, it was crafted as a four-year plan to reconstruct cities, industries and infrastructure heavily damaged during the war and to remove trade barriers between European neighbors.

The announcement ended the costly full-scale civil war between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang , which broke out immediately following World War II and had been preceded by on and off conflict between the two sides since the 1920’s. The creation of the PRC also completed the long process of governmental upheaval in China begun by the Revolution. The “fall” of mainland China to communism in 1949 led the United States to suspend diplomatic ties with the PRC for decades.

The Korean War (1950-1953) began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded non-Communist South Korea. This Chinese army attacked the US/UN/ROK forces. America had slashed its military budget after the end of World War II and was short both men and equipment. On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union and China, invaded South Korea, which was supported by the United States. General MacArthur, leader of the United Nations forces, drove the North Koreans back across the divide, yet encountered a Chinese invasion.

In 1973 a “third”Vietnam war began a continuation, actually between North and South Vietnam but without significant U.S. involvement. It ended with communist victory in April 1975.The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam. This was part of the domino theory of a wider containment policy, with the stated aim of stopping the spread of communism.

During the early years of the Cold War, West Berlin was a geographical loophole where thousands of East Germans fled to the democratic West. In response, the Communist East German authorities built a wall that totally encircled West Berlin. It was thrown up overnight, on 13 August 1961. In an effort to stem the tide of refugees attempting to leave East Berlin, the communist government of East Germany begins building the Berlin Wall to divide East and West Berlin. Construction of the wall caused a short-term crisis in U.S.-Soviet bloc relations, and the wall itself came to symbolize the Cold War. The Soviet Union built the Berlin Wall separating communist East Germany from democratic West Germany because the fence they erected was not doing its job. Yes, it started as a fence and over time became a wall. The Soviet Union's official reason was that it wanted its borders identified, and to guard against intruders.

Missile Crisis of October 1962 was a direct and dangerous confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War and was the moment when the two superpowers came closest to nuclear conflict. The overall cause of the Cuban Missile Crisis was the Cold War conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. There are other causes, but they all stem from this cause. Because the US feared the USSR, it placed nuclear missiles in Europe that could hit the Soviet Union. It happened when the Soviet Union (USSR) began building missile sites in Cuba in 1962. Together with the earlier Berlin Blockade, this crisis is seen as one of the most important confrontations of the Cold War.

The collapse of the Soviet Union started in the late 1980s and was complete when the country broke up into 15 independent states on December 25, 1991. This signaled the end of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. Mikhail Gorbachev was elected General Secretary of the Soviet Union in 1985. When the Soviet Union's oil and gas revenue dropped dramatically, the USSR began to lose its hold on Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Gorbachev's reforms were slow to bear fruit and did more to hasten the collapse of the Soviet Union than to help it. On December 25, Gorbachev resigned as leader of the USSR. Gorbachev was responsible for the collapse of the soviet empire to a point. In 1985 when he came to power, he realized that the soviet economy was devastated and facing many problems with communism making the situation much worse. Gorbachev realized that reforms were needed to stabilize the economy.
