Social Determinants that Immigrants Face within Australia.

Coming from third-world regions, immigrants already face lower social and economic determinants from these places. Migrating into countries, such as Western Australia, these determinants will cease to change due to cultural and financial differences or will oppose a greater challenge, to finding proper secure employment, housing, and reliable healthcare services.

Employment –

Founded in 2020, immigrants are more likely to migrate to rural settings, to ‘revitalise rural communities,’ however, rural regions have already been identified with lower economic resources including security, social discrimination, and healthcare, furthermore, expanding rural areas' horizons to bigger communities equates to fewer job opportunities, (Anna Ziersch, November 2020). Responding to finding employment opportunities may be difficult for immigrants coming from another country, clashing with communication barriers, cultural differences, and institutional discrimination, (Richard Towle, June 2013).

Housing -

Lack of employment corresponds to a limited financial income, it determines the performance of education for immigrants, housing and basic amenities, social disadvantages and poor health which can result in homelessness and exploitation. Immigrants may end up ‘house-hopping,’ with multiple individuals, in shared hotels, hostels, garages, and homeless accommodations in hopes of a ‘secure’ room for the night, even though it may endanger them further, (State of New South Wales (Department of Education), 2020).

Access to health services -

Migrants may already experience prejudice and insufficient mainstream healthcare due to their difficult living and working situations. Migrants are frequently excluded from government programmes for health promotion, illness prevention, treatment, and care, especially when they are in an irregular position. Additionally, they may have to deal with excessive user fees, low levels of health literacy, inadequate translating services, stigma, and poor cultural competency among healthcare professionals. (WHO, May 2022).

Modern-day Australian music has been known to produce a variety of popular music, including rock, pop and other various art styles, though, founding in previous recordings throughout history, traditional music called ‘bush ballads,’ is sung and played amongst interesting instrumentals. This includes handclapping, sticks, rattles and the famous wind instrument, ‘Didgeridoo’.

Didgeridoos are played dominantly via male Aboriginals as women play ‘Clapsticks.’ A didgeridoo is a long hollow branch, measuring about 1-3 meters in length that is blown through one end and a usual low tone is received at the other, (Australia Music History, Music History of Australia, History of Australian Music, n.d.). Whilst playing the didgeridoo, the person breathes through the nasal cavity, to gain a continuous sound and steady rhythm. Though it isn't heard in modern-day popular songs, its popularity shines amongst the media.

For me, health is defined as social, physical, and mental well-being, constructed positively or negatively, to alter a certain person’s interactions, lifestyles and environment. Having pessimistic aspects could jeopardise any of the key factors listed; for context, this could mean withdrawing from social and emotional demographics, being limited to orderly physical behaviours, and having irrational ideas. As for, having a higher-quality lifestyle, people would choose ‘healthier’ alternatives, doing the opposite as someone who has ‘poor’ health.

How can apply The Domain 7 Standards to my Nursing Profession?

The chapter "Domain 7: Professional Practise" explains how most clinicians are committed to cultural responsiveness, reflexivity, and self-awareness in practice. This is done by using skills and knowledge experienced throughout my nursing journey including prioritising the patient's needs, using language that the patient can understand, providing high-quality care, and interpreting the patient's facial expressions and body language to their needs. In a clinic, if the occasion arises, an immigrant may lack English skills, Practise point 5 may be necessary, ‘When working with telephone interpreter, clinicians use a speakerphone or a hands-free telephone whilst communicating.’ For me, this is significant to create a patient and nurse bond, as words may be twisted or miscommunicated. To my understanding, this could result in further trust, ensuring the patient will provide me with medical knowledge of their history and reasoning for entering the hospital.

Australian Aboriginal people had long-standing traditions in the visual arts at the time when European explorers arrived, including body ornamentation, bark painting, sand sculpture, and rock art (painted or carved rocks). The significance and enduring worth of Aboriginal artistic traditions are now fully acknowledged by the art market, art critics, and museums. Selling handcrafted art to visitors and an eager art market is how many Aboriginal tribes make money, a requirement that has occasionally been problematic given the spiritual and ancestor-centred significance the artists attached to their creations, (Australia, n.d.).

An Australian artist, Tom Roberts, created the famous 1886 painting, 'Coming South.' The painting above illustrates immigrants arriving in Australia from Europe aboard a steamship. His image was according to his own sketches he made whilst coming back to Australia from his own travels.

(Creative Victoria, n.d.).
