Animation workshops

Today we had our first animation workshops with Jack. I genuinely enjoyed the session and liked how the teacher started the workshops by teaching the basics. Learning how to use After Effects step by step was very helpful. At the end of the 3 hour session I already feel like I will be capable of developing my FMP, especially if I attend the rest of the lessons. I've attached a short video of today's outcome, I managed to move certain objects from the image I had previously created in Procreate, and then layered in Photoshop. I like how the plants move under water, but the sharks's swimming could be improved. Perhaps I should add eye and fin movement, and play with speed and directions to get a bit more overall dynamic. What today's lesson taught me is that I should think about what objects and how I want to move them prior to digitally illustrating them, so that I know how to layer specific elements. This way, I can create layers as I illustrate in Procreate, which would save me a lot of time.

Feedback

My own reflection and feedback led to my realisation that the illustrations I've created so far are not very suitable for my audience. Very clean, thick lines and flat colours would be great for a children's book but my audience, who's a bit older (at least 12) would probably enjoy stills that have more textures and shadows. Therefore, my next step is transforming my characters and environments, which will be achieved by experimenting with different brushes in Procreate.

Narrowing my audience

Initially, my audience was supposed to be made of people who watched Jaws and have a wrong impression of sharks. However, after thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that even though it's a classic film that many people has seen, it's not as relevant anymore. It only gave shark films a beginning. Nowadays, young people watch new movies such as 47 meters down, The Meg, The reef, and yes, they still portray sharks the same way Jaws did. Therefore, my audience are not only people who watched Jaws. I believe that young people/teenagers are most impressionable and it's easy for them to form an opinion on issues. My job is to show them sharks from a different perspective, show them what the mentioned shark films don't. Of course, anyone is welcome to watch my animation, but my mane target is audience aged 12-20.

Illustrating for the new audience.

Since I narrowed my audience I've been working on new illustrations. My main focus is to create something that looks more realistic in order to make it more suitable for adults, but considering my youngest audience is expected to be 12, I don't want to make it look too real either. I prefer to keep the illustrations clean and not too experimental, because I want everyone to understand the story and highlight the issue.

I tried to combine all new elements together and I wasn’t quite satisfied with how they all look together. I should try and keep my animation in one style. I am the happiest with the sharks, therefore I’ll attempt to redesign the other elements so they all match. I think I should spend more time illustrating the plants and focus on details. I should also add some rocks and elements swimming in the background such as schools of fish. It will make the ocean look richer. There are some effects in Procreate I might experiment with such as blur, bloom or noise. Applying them to certain objects could bring the illustrations to a higher level.

Horror

What I like the most about my animation is the fact that I managed to make it gruesome, just as planned. The colours, sounds, and reoccurring blood splatters in most of the scenes make the animation a horror genre. It probably won't make anyone really scared or grossed out considering it's still animated, but I think the above mentioned elements of horror get the point of this animation across.
