If we were Carl after losing someone close, our first reaction would certainly be to feel great sadness and hold onto the memories, just like he did by keeping the house exactly as it was. However, knowing the movie’s message, we would quickly realize that the best way to honor that person is to keep living fully and courageously. We would try to find a way to honor the past while embracing a new purpose. Perhaps we would choose to mentor someone younger, just as Carl bonded with Russell, or start a new small adventure that our lost loved one would have found funny or exciting. The key would be to turn the love we lost into a new way to connect with the world.
