In this video you will see how the teacher uses a running record with her student. You will see how she takes notes of when the student says a word incorrectly, and how she will put 'sc' for self-check when the student gets the word wrong the first time but goes back to fix his mistake. You see how you would describe the book to the student before they read for the running record. The teacher will prompt the student to try his best when he is struggling on a word, but eventually she will tell him what the word is and how she writes what the student says over the word they are on. I think this video is a great way to show how you take notes on the running record and giving feedback to the student.

Prezi

In this prezi you learn what are running records , why you use running records, and how you take a running record. Not just that but it tells you how to score the running record, figuring out how to find the percentage of accuracy, wants you to analyze reading behaviors, the difference between meaning cues, visual cues, and structured cues. Three other things it talks about is self-correction, cues as strategies, and self-monitoring strategies. I think this prezi is resourceful especially for first year teachers. It goes in depth of what they are, what they are used for, and how to use it. If anyone has any questions on running records, this prezi has the answer.
-The biggest thing I can take from this prezi is that running records are used to guide your teaching and track your students progress. I think this is fundamental in all classes and I love that there is a way to do both of these in one with the running record.

I remember when my teacher would do running records with me as a student. I never realized what all the notes were for, I really thought everything she wrote down was bad. It doesn't mean you are bad at reading because most of the time they are writing check marks, but there will be times they take notes on your reading and that is so when you take the next running record they can compare how you have progressed.
However, I have not been in a placement where the teacher has given their students a running record. I would like to see first hand how a teacher gives one and how they score their students.

This article gives you tips to make your running records manageable and useful. The one that I thought was the most important that I have never noticed before during this whole process of learning about running records was setting goals with students. When you set goals with your students you will see that they make much more progress than what you'd expect. With setting goals you make sure to teach them what they need the most and you will see how they take in that information and add it to what they already know. The you set the goals for each student, let them know what is expected of them and give them feedback and comprehending questions with each running record they are given.
