In this stage we were able to successfully observe the nature of many interactions between patients at Corewell GH and their doctors as well as interactions between patients and technology, specifically in the check-in process.

Something that surprised us was that through our observations of how many of the patients navigate Corewell GH, we noticed that a lot of them felt more comfortable checking in and speaking to human staff members than using the kiosks and tablets, which they didn't feel as confident that they had successfully completed their task after using.

We could have tried to observe more people's actions and emotions while checking in and as they are in the waiting room.

What went well was that we as a group all had a concise understanding of what our solution was, and it was easy to reflect upon what we had witnessed so far during our internship and use that information.

The amount of time we spent in the understanding phase was significantly shorter than in other stages and was surprising.

Something we would do differently is balance the activities we did during the understanding phase.

Something we did well was that our team was able to come together really well to come up with the most important questions to ask. Our team also held multiple professional interviews where we were able to gain a lot of insight.

Some surprising things we learned were from interviewing James and Becky. We learned a lot about some of the important things that we need to be thinking about as we enter the incubation stage.

Something we would do differently is that we could look for more staff members to speak to.

Something that went well was that we had a good pitch to the IchallengeU group.

Something surprising was how diverse the different slideshows and presentational skills were.

We did an idea quota, where everyone took around five minutes and wrote out every single idea that came to mind. After doing this, we organized our ideas into groups and figured out which ones were of the most importance.

We have a lot of group discussions. After each discussion, we often share what we learned, and we always listen to each other's ideas, questions, and concerns. We also use Google Docs, Slides, and texting to communicate our ideas and bring our ideas together.

Critical Friends went very well, it was very productive, and it felt like we received good feedback and hopefully have good feedback.

Something that surprised us was the amount of help the Corewell staff was able to give us. We were given many official presentations and documents that helped us come up with our solution.

Next time, we think it would be beneficial if we narrowed down and officially worded our solution sooner, as opposed to just assuming what the solution is.

To further develop solutions to our driving question we decided to take a step back and address the second part of our question, that being how to optimize check in at Corewell. While considering this we all took time to set up a poster that we were going to write our concerns with check in and how we would address the concerns. After finishing the poster we did a dot test to identify which solutions everyone liked best.

Corewell Health Grand Haven is currently in the process of switching how patients check in. This new system will move from face to face check in to an automated system. Corewell GH also struggles with patient flow and communication between departments within the facility. The ultimate challenge is how can we help with patient check in, flow, and communication on campus at Corewell Grand Haven.

To start our day on Friday we all got together to narrow down what we felt was most important to solve our DQ. We looked at the categories we came up with from our 100 ideas protocol and found that 'Signs' and 'Maps' had the most sticky notes, so those were the two solutions we narrowed down to.

Deborah Andre just completed her 25th year in education with 24 of those years at Hudsonville Public Schools. She is the Director of Vocal Music and Musical Theater at Hudsonville High School and this is her second year with the Future Prep'd program.
