Share more about food customs in your culture. Consider answering these questions:
1. What foods are indicative of your culture? What food items are needed to make a meal for you?
2. How many meals do you eat every day? Are snacks a part of your food routine?
3. When, where, and with whom do you normally eat?
You are also welcome to share other details and pictures!

Since my family is from Mexico, I feel like I have rich and diverse food ways and customs. Almost every meal we eat includes rice, a protein (chicken, meat, fish, etc.), and SALSA! For me and my family, the spicier the better. Interestingly, when I am in Mexico, my food times and habits change. We tend to eat a savory breakfast and then a big meal around 2 p.m. and then a lighter option at dinner. While in the U.S., my family and I follow the more normative meal structure of lighter breakfast and lunch and heavier dinner options. I will admit that I enjoy snacking, though, it is not as common when I am in Mexico. Here is a picture of one of my favorite dishes--Chile Rellenos (Stuffed Peppers).

I would say a must need for me is eggs and rice.

As an American, I think one of the most famous things we are known for is our fast food. The undeniable king of all fast foods is McDonald's. Fast food is a big part of American culture. It is convenient for people who are on the go and don't have the time to cook. You can't find a street corner without a fast food restaurant. However, fast foods often contain unhealthy ingredients and can lead to health problems.

Being Mexican-American means that I grew up eating a variety of foods from Mexico. Mexican food has a lot of spices and fresh produce namely dried chilies, cinnamon, onions, cilantro and tomato. Some well known dishes and my personal favorites are carne con chile, menudo and tamales. The last two are popular around the holidays especially! For menudo you need hominy, a specific corn kernel and cow tripe and feet. It's normally topped with cilantro, onions and crushed pepper. Tamales can be both savory or sweet but in order to make them you need corn husks, masa (a mixture of lard and corn that creates a paste) and some sort of filling. Savory tamales are usually filled with meat, Chiles, olives or cheese whole sweet tamales can be filled with strawberries, nuts or pineapple. Making tamales is usually a job that gets the entire family involved and to me it means spending time with them to make a ton of delicious tamales . I usually eat 2 meals a day (not really a breakfast person) and have a habit of eating too many snacks. I love food and cooking, I usually make dinner and enjoy it. My family eats around the table.

I am part of the Hispanic culture, and we have a lot of tasteful meals. When I see my nana cooking, I always see her with a ton of spices that she would use to make her amazing food. I personally only eat 2 or 1 meal a day. When I do eat it is with my family. We like to gather around the table, and talk about our days. Then once we all share, we sit down and watch tv.

I feel like a food custom I have with my family is not only in the food but preparing it, in my Mexican family, it is a respectful thing to ask if the cooker needs any help. Due to the cold weather, a lot of meals that have been cooked are Pozole Rojo and Verde and tamales which I love! I eat 2 meals a day, I usually skip breakfast to get more sleep. Snacks are not really apart of my food routine because it is not a staple, there's days i do and days I do not. I eat during the day and night time, In the Kitchen Table, and with my family.

One of my favorite dishes from my culture is Pozole. Pozole is a traditioinal mexican dish usually served during holidays or big get togethers. It is a great winter dish because it warms the soul. It usually includes hominy, a type of meat (Chicken or pork), and garnished with lettuce or cabbage, chile peppers, onion, garlic, radishes, salsa. The great thing about Pozole is that it always tastes better the next day so leftovers are always something to look forward to.
