Plenty of the students took the ideas of equalitarianism with them by involving the local community. SNCC started dressing down when talking to other people who are in a lower class and validated their experience. They shook hands with sharecroppers and listened to what they had to say. I realized the value in collaborating with everyone, especially those who may not have the resources to fight their oppressor. But like Baker said, they did not need to take over and allow those more disadvantaged to bring their ideas and figure out what they need to do to fight.

Something I would like to add to my own political and leadership philosophy is to value the planning behind our actions. Baker emphasized the importance of this to SNCC. Planning allowed Baker and SNCC to exchange ideas and work out kinks. I believe it added to what made them a political family. While I am a "I want positive change now" type of person, I learned that planning is purposeful and that time commitment benefits the actions put in place

To add on to the point about the Democratic National Convention, I think that chicanery was used to distract and deter people from hearing what Fannie Lou Hamer was going to say. There was also the silencing of a Black woman in the process. This parallels events and situations that happen in politics today, where we often we see politicians or people in different positions "speaking over" or commandeering issues within our communities to further their agenda and simultaneously silence us. -Janette
