Where I went to high-school (Brampton), we did a "no-exam" system, and we had culminating projects and interviews instead. So, I haven't actually had any exam experience or much need to study, let alone do notes. The only classes we had exams in were Math and Science, but those were cancelled due to COVID. It was nice to not have exams because I find that I thrive better through projects—and my public speaking skills are through the roof, but it wasn't too practical because university has exams.

While I had some great teachers and friends in both high school and middle school, the "learning" experience was not the best. I enjoyed connecting with other people and working on projects together as I felt that we made learning and work more enjoyable that way but just memorizing and working towards getting good marks on tests was not fun imo.

I enjoyed my pre-university education quite a bit, but I recognize that the system was certainly a little flawed. I had always felt a little behind in my courses to the simply extensive mass of information always being lumped onto me. I believe that perhaps grade thirteen deserved to remain for students to figure themselves out.

I had a very good intro to university through one of my calculus teachers in grade 12. Through him, I was able to get directly applicable advice and knowledge for my program. However, this was not the case for every course. Due to the pandemic, I felt like 90% of the material was watered down. After high school, I pursured an engineering Technology program at a college here in Toronto. My college experience was vastly different than my highschool experience as there were a lot of hands on experiences I had gained during each course. Unlike highschool, learning about physics and seldomly applying those concepts into an application. At college I was able work on labs the same week we learned a new concept and I believe that make me realize I learn better with my hands.

A lot of the time I find that highschool teachers aren't very passionate about the subject that theyre teaching which impacts the quality of their lessons. My grade 11 biology/chemistry teacher was so passionate and enthusiastic about science that she made learning it enjoyable even with the heavier course load. Her passion also helped me feel less stressed in her class and therefore retained a lot of the information that she taught. I was very stressed in grade 12 biology and chemistry... I hardly remember anything from those courses.

I feel that ever since Covid, I have felt behind. I feel that I should still be in high school. I find that I did a lot of things a year late. I got my license at 17 instead of 16, I didn’t take a proper exam until the twelfth grade, etc. because of this I feel that I am now struggling to catch up with where I should be. It's been a while since I've been in school. The last of my education was through a few Horticultural and Landscape Design collges,Humber and Seneca. Mostly hands-on classes, and a few electives. None the less the studies were straightforward and I wasn't in the right headspace. I was far too focused on other things.... None the less, for me, University has been wildly eye-opening and humbling all the same. In the past, my study habits were horrible, and for this, I chalk it down to my limiting beliefs, begrudging insecurities, and lack of Self-confidence. This time around, is vastly different. I'm skipping a lot of context. I used to go to a private school in Colombia (since I was 4 until I was 11). I learnt many different things and was able to have cool experiences with courses that most schools don't usually explore such as robotics, science labs with animals and other opportunities. Not everyone in my country had that privilege. Since I was young I've always wanted to be a doctor or dentist and work with my parents.

I was always okay at math during primary school. But when I started middle school, I started getting behind. One day, my math teacher held me back after class to tell me that there’s a study group two days a week after school for those that struggle in math. I remember feeling so embarrassed because my friends weren’t struggling as much as I was.

But I went anyway because I figured that it might help, and I actually cared about doing well in math— that’s why it hurt to be told I’m not that great.

I attended the sessions for some time. Everyone was super nice and they answered all my questions. In fact, they always encouraged to ask more questions, to think critically and come up with questions.

My grades started improving. And one day, when we received our grades back, my teacher took the time to say that I had gotten the highest grade not only of my class, but I’d scored higher than the advanced class of 7th grade. We had some classes that were reserved for the best students (they had to take an admission test to get in).

I will never forget that moment. While I first thought that my teacher asked me to attend out of spite or disappointment, I realized it was out of love.

He was so proud of my grade. He believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. He asked me to attend because he knew that I was smart enough, I just needed a little encouragement and some love.

Whenever I am doubting my abilities about anything, I think about that story. I think about how I came from the bottom and rose to the top. And I remind myself that it does not matter if you struggle, what matters is how much effort you put in to improve.

During the beginning of my secondary school experience I’ve always slacked within my in school and extracurricular because it was a new environment and due to me not caring much as a whole. Yet one day due to me stumbling into a bad area where one of my family members live, I’ve came to find out how they’ve gone through what I have and ended up in a horrible place. With this new sense of understanding I’ve made sure to actually take time and care into my school work to turn my average of 60 to an average of high 80 and low 90s.

Growing up I never put in the effort to focus on my studies, up until high school. I specifically struggled/didn’t like math and didn’t seek for proper assistance until I was in grade 10. When I started to put in the effort, I realized that I enjoyed math and wasn’t bad at it after all. In grade 11 I decided I wanted to go into engineering, so I took math along with chemistry and physics. When I got to grade 12 I some how began to struggle with and not enjoy math (especially calculus), which lead me to not going into engineering. I have been interested in most stem subjects for a large portion of my life. In elementary school, I had an obsession with space (so, like, astronomy and astrophysics). I was also very in to writing stuff, so I would write thousands-of-words-long “papers” talking about the stuff I learnt on, like, Wikipedia and YouTube and turn them into stories. Keep in mind I was 9-years-old, so it was quite bad and also aimless. As I got older, my focus started to shift particularly to biology, which I am studying right now at UTM. These days I simply do not have time to do all that funky writing stuff, which I think sucks. I still do it in my head sometimes, though.

But sometimes the journey can wear you down a lot and it becomes easy to think about whether mediocracy is enough because it hurts less or whether excellence is worth the trouble. One learning I had in high school was navigating through different learning styles to determine what works best for me. Encouraged by my high school chemistry teacher, I learned that my learning style and studying techniques did not mostly align with what I was doing at the time although I was getting good grades. This experience helped me in university as it prepared me for the hard work and time required.

The whole premise revolved around learning beyond the classroom and getting to choose what you want to learn. I grew up in a Montessori school where the learning approach is very different compared to regular public schools. Almost all of the learning was hands on which made it more fun to do so, however, it was also a very effective way to not only learn but to retain that information. These skills made my post-secondary education in the IB program much easier as well, where i developed more learning skills which can hopefully be applied in my undergrad and beyond.

I had a terrible teacher for math. This teacher wasn't open at all and made it hard to ask questions. Ended the class with a grade I am not proud of. I did have a great experience with my english teacher. She had more collaborative projects and tends to try to get one on one with students.
