What is intercultural understanding?

The intercultural understanding focuses on helping students to develop knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes that enables them to appreciate and respect others from different communities and culturers. It is a combination of knowledge about other cultures at a cognitive level, combined with a set of attitudes at the affective level. Knowledge includes knowledge about one's own culture, other cultures and the similarities and differences between cultures. For example, students of all ages consider their own and different cultural practices, values and stories as part of their school days. They learn to appreciate and value their own and other cultural perspectives and practices, and find out about the similar and different ways people communicate in family and cultural groups.

Reflection:#1. Global Citizenship Education means civic learning that involves learners participation that address global issues of social, economic or environmental. It has three domains the cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioral. Cognitive domains which is focuses on the learners thinking, reasoning and remembering. Socio-emotional is relating to emotion of the individual and last is behavioral which talk about individual actions.GCED also has three priorities as catalyzed by the GEFI. the first is put every child in school, next improve the quality of learning and last is foster global citizenship.

Reflection:#2. Intercultural understanding for me is understanding two or more culture. Intercultural describes communities in which there is a deep understanding and respect for all cultures. Intercultural understanding also combines personal, interpersonal skills(decision-making,assertiveness, negotiation, verbal communication, problem solving, listening skills and non verbal communication) and social knowledge skills which is the ability to connect with other people. The intercultural understanding capabilty focuses on helping learners to develop knowledge, skills, behaviors and attitude that enable them to appreciate and respect others from different communities and cultures.

Honestly I am not familiar with GCED, so when they asked us about our opinion and understanding on Global Citizenship Education i immediately sought for help from everybodys' search buddy (Google). According to Google GCED is a form of civic learning that involves students active participation in projects that address global issues of a social, political, economic/environmental issue. Then as Ma'am Reynalin Lipata explained further I realized that GCED is important most especially to the learners cause this will mold them to become more responsible global citizens. With this young people will be able to solve problems, make decisions, think critically, communicates ideas effectively and work well with others.

According to him it is an essential part of living with others in the diverse world of the 21st century. It assists young people to become responsible local and global citizen equipped through their education for living and working together in an interconnected world. Guided and explained by the facilitator, Ma'am Betonio, I was enlightened that intercultural understanding focuses on helping learners to develop knowledge, skills, behavior, and attitude that enable them to appreciate and respect others from different communities and cultures. It is very important, 'cause it allows to give meaning to different aspect of our lives and communicate effectively with others in a variety of social settings, helping us to understand the views and perspective of other people.

GCED wants to promote a better world where citizens are aware and has compassion towards every human and nature. They wanted to teach every child their responsibility towards their surroundings, their responsibility for his/her actions, and their rights as citizen of his/her country.

As what the facilitators had said, we teachers are the facilitator of learning. We should not stick with the "old school" way of teaching which is "spoonfeeding". Learning takes place when learners participate during discussions. Learners need to be active and engage in different activities so that they can relate and understand what we are teaching them. If we are teaching inside the classroom lets make it an imaginative playground where they can move freely, feel and do whatever task is given to them. GCED as the facilitator had said, is an education for transformation where the desired outcome is to take action for change. We need to change ourselves, others the society towards a sustainable and peaceful global community.

There are numerous symbolization of a dove, some of which are gentleness, unity and peace. We are instructed earlier to make a paper dove to be sent to one of the advocates of GCED. While making the paper dove I was hoping that it will make the receiver happy. I remember one of the participants of the workshop, she said she wanted her paper dove to reach those countries which are now at war. It came to my senses the real meaning and importance of this activity. This teaches us not to be selfish. This activity reminds us that we should wish peace to other people although we don't know them. Dove also symbolizes hope, hope that every heart would be at peace right now. Hope that every nation or country will be at peace it may not be today but in the near future.

The 6 pedagogical principles of GCED are Dialogue and participation, holistic and interdisciplinary, multi-modal, values formation, critical empowerment and applicable and relevant. As a teacher we should be facilitators of learning. It is in learning by doing that our learners will be able to understand clearly and fully what we needed and wanted to teach them. There pedagogical strategies we may use in teaching GCED, which are centered solely on the learner which will create a bigger transformation. Some of which are role playing, mimicking and more.
