My sister-in-law was laid off from her job after a long day of having to lay off others (She works in HR). They used her all day during the mass layoff and then sent her packing at the end of the day. She used the time off after that for a lot of self care and self reflection. She's working again and in a much better place physically and emotionally

Misunderstood. It was a word associated with weakness, but also openness about one's self. I grew up as the child of a psychologist, so being vulnerable was encouraged to an extent.

Asking others to trust me, as much as I trust them. I am vulnerable with the ones I trust, and I hope they understand that. I want them to trust me as well.

I want to be the type of leader that is referred to as "reasonable". Vulnerability and courage is being able to understand the perspectives of the entire team, and being able to confidently say "I don't know", while also being able to know where to look for solutions and being able to adapt quickly to changes.

This isn't a specific scenario, but I've seen leaders in my career make a difficult decision without knowing what the exact outcome will be. Anytime a leader has to make a decision quickly and take a risk knowing the outcome might not be ideal, the leader is bravely facing uncertainty.

I will never forget the look on my husband's face when the doctor told him he had cancer. He responded with, "Ok, thanks, Doc. I appreciate you all taking good care of me today." We held hands as we walked to the parking lot in complete silence. Then, we get in the car and he said, "I'm hungry. Can we get some bean burritos on the way home?" Now, he continues to bravely face uncertainty everyday as he navigates finding his new normal and some type of daily existence not knowing how he will feel or how much pain he will be in each and everyday.

A good friend of mine is a nontraditional student that recently started medical school. Medical school is a big leap for anyone and there is no minimizing the potential for added stressors for nontraditional students. She has remained fully committed and continues to tackle the demands of medical school with determination and resilience.

More often than not, being able to muster the courage that will allow myself to be appropriately vulnerable even when I am not certain how that vulnerability will be received. Appropriateness is key for me because I think it's an important skill to have the emotional maturity to see when a situation benefits from vulnerability.

Being more open with communication without overthinking first. Specifically with online communication. Quick communication can leave me feeling vulnerable because I worry I'll say something wrong. This overthinking leads to sometimes forgetting to respond or delaying the response significantly which can be received as me not caring and that's the exact opposite of my intention!

As an instructor I default to wanting to teach through sharing my words but I'd like to be known as a leader that listened as well. Some of the best compliments I've received were from students who would spend 28 minutes of a 30 minute meeting talking but would leave feeling like I somehow imparted all the wisdom of the world.
