Just like the phrase sounds, the point of checks and balances was to make sure no one branch would be able to control too much power, and it created a separation of powers. These checks and balances include:
1) The legislative branch makes laws, but the President in the executive branch can veto those laws with a Presidential Veto.
2) The judicial branch interprets laws, but the Senate in the legislative branch confirms the President’s nominations for judicial positions, and Congress can impeach any of those judges and remove them from office.

What kind of country would America be if we were punished by expressing ourselves? That wouldn't represent freedom, a word that America prides itself over. Secondly, I believe twelve amendment is also important. Prior to the ratification of this amendment, the vice president was the runner up for the presidency. This caused a lot of problems as two opposing parties would have many different views while acting as President and Vice President. The Electoral College is the mechanism established by the U.S Constitution for the election of the President and Vice President of the United States. Citizens vote in each state and the District of Columbia at a general election to choose a slate of "electors" who are pledged to vote for a particular party's candidate. This may be contrary to the Popular Vote.
