As an educator I see the value in allowing high school students taking college level courses to earn credits for future transfers but as a parent I have mixed feeling on this issue. Personally, I don’t want my children to be burdened with additional school work on top of any extracurricular activities they might have while holding down a part-time/after school job. Additionally, I don’t want my children at 16 years old making potential long-term career decisions by earning a degree or credits in a program that may not have an interest in by time they are adults. I guess the middle ground for me personally would be so long as these classes are optional and are generals/basics only, then I am alright with it.

Hi Laura,
Like you, I am conflicted on the notion of early college high schools (ECHS). While I agree that it is a cost effect path towards higher education and maximizing the time spent in the classroom; I am equally concerned that students associated with these educational opportunities miss out on valuable experiences common to traditional high school pursuits. For example, students attending the early college high school associated with the campus where I'm employed do not have opportunities to participate in extra curricular sporting activities, prom or any other milestone celebrations. We also had a few incidents where traditional students began to take romantic interest in ECHS students, unaware of their actual age or status. These traditional students assumed they were of age because they were introduced to ECHS students as classmates. How might college officials and ECHS administrators collaborate to ensure holistic experiences and development of ECHS students are not stunted?
-Taneekwa

Like the others who have commented, I am conflicted as well. When I first heard of early college high school, I thought it sounded great. Who wouldn't want to graduate from high school with an associate's degree? As I have spent more time in higher education I have noticed how damaging it can be; academically, socially, emotionally. I believe that ECHS students miss out on high school and college experiences. I think ECHS has potential but it may need a little extra attention.

Hi Laura,

Early College High School is an interesting topic and one that, in my opinion, needs a little more research. My husband currently works at an Early College High School and I work at the college campus where the school is located, so I get to see both sides of the picture. I think Early College is a great opportunity for those students emotionally and academically prepared. Giving an opportunity to a student that may otherwise not have thought about college as a possibility is great! They are getting their high school degree and associates for free! Most of the students my husband works with, are lower income and their parents would not have been able to pay their way through school otherwise. For students that take advantage of this program, I see the benefits and why it’s so popular.

Unfortunately, not all of the students being accepted to these programs are emotionally and academically prepared. The biggest problem I’ve seen while working at the college is how unprepared some of these students are. I helped enroll a student this semester that had graduated from Early College in the spring. She received her high school diploma but was short hours for her Associates. Her GPA was a 1.5 and she had many semesters of D’s and F’s. In my opinion, the student shouldn’t have been allowed to continue with Early College. It may sound harsh, but now the student will need to retake most if not all of those courses. She has two additional years to try and bring up her GPA to even be considered into the program she wants to apply for. I don’t think students know the importance of a college transcript as freshman. The responsibility of educating them prior to applying for the program is the administrations responsibility. I also think having a better vetting system for students applying and while in the program would help this specific issue (at least at our school).
