Colour grading across products

Throughout each and every product I created, I used the same saturation and vintage colour grading techniques to wash out the sharp detail and contrast. Applying this across my video, digipak and poster meant I could create the idea of a 'brand identity'. This idea is about showing the consumers what you want to bring into the industry by representing it consistently within the brand. For example, the use of vintage styled colour grading across my media texts ensured the audience could see the style of the artist and genre I was aiming for. This particular feature elevates the idea of having a modern twist of a vintage song. I felt this was effective as the continuity across all products emphasised the idea of a re-mastering of an already existing song.

This is hugely important for creating Synergy across products so anytime someone sees a product, they will associate it with the re-mastering of the 'Eagles' brand and album (One of These Nights). If more people recognise this style, the more attention all products will gain from audiences.

Brand Identity Example: Muse

This band are a hugely significant example of showing the use of Brand Identity. Muse use the same font, two lines above and below their name and a white colour. This means, now anytime someone looks at a poster or album or any product with this logo, they are instantly going to gain attraction due to everyone associating this particular logo with the band 'Muse', therefore giving it more chance of audiences such as fans to quickly purchase or take interest to the knew product being shown.

Brand Identity: Within my own products

I used the idea of keeping the same artist logo on my poster and digipak because it linked the two products together, therefore associating both with the artist and creating more attention for the re-mastered album and video. This can also make the logo iconic to the artist as a whole as anytime this is seen, people will think of the Eagles and their famous hits, therefore ensuring their name is still being spoken about today due to a modern twist of their music and logo, thus spreading the range of audiences I could target. This also shows what type of band it being portrayed because the gold, bold writing connotes to classic and pristine due to the basic bold writing but classy gold colour, both which have been used for years to emphasise class and modesty.
I further used a gold outer glow on both the album and poster to emphasise the importance of the brand as it highlights the word to the audience. For example, I highlighted the word 'remastered' with a golden outer glow to ensure the audience could define the modern, updated album and poster from the original album and other original products.

Combination of Mise-En-Scene

An example of this is 'Hotel California' by the Eagles, which displays an album and vinyl cover of a hotel in the sunset. This helps relate the album cover to the song 'Hotel California' as its visuals link to the lyrics and create synergy across the song and the products. Therefore whenever anyone sees the picture, it immediately gives off the desired effect of thinking about the song 'Hotel California'. This effectively promotes the song and album, however there is no music video to link the mise-en-scene further, therefore I extended the use of this into my music video also to further the desired effect of linking all the products together.

Record Label

When creating my products I realised it needed to have a record label that would produce it. I used the record label 'Asylum Records' at the end of the 'One of These Nights' music video I created to ensure it was clear the same company created this, as well as the poster and album (where I also included the record labels name or logo). I didn't plan to add this as it was a feature that I overlooked, however when I did apply it I kept with the rest of my planning and kept a simple design on my poster and digipak, hence always keeping the record label fairly discrete or not overly complicated on each product. This is because I wanted to keep it simple to suit the classic genre (as there wouldn't of been overly technical logos or design) keeping the authentic feel.

Poster Design: What makes it attractive to an audience?

However, I did keep the 'brand identity' of saturation, as well as a gold font and conceptual picture as it gives the audience, which could be anyone walking past the poster, an idea of what style the music and artist is. I kept the amount of information basic as a poster is often glanced at, rather than inspected with thorough detail, therefore keeping it basic but attractive with a clear golden font on a back background ensures the audience get a fast and easy understanding of what it involves.

Nonetheless I do believe I could have advertised the music video to maximise attention to the modern style of the 're-mastering' of the album because it is not mentioned anywhere, therefore will get less attention and views than if I advertised it.

How do I think the Digipak will sell the song or album to my audience?

The Digipak was designed to draw the audience in immediately with a picture of the artist as it is an iconic band. When focusing on an older demographic who most likely know the artist, this will help draw them in due to the familiarity of the picture and the artist name in clear gold writing at the top. However, the reason I chose to keep the colour scheme basic and old fashioned was too ensure the genre was seen by any audience. For example, the brown leather texture displayed on the back of the album, with gold writing suggests a vintage theme because it was popular in this genre and decades (70s and 80s).

However, this is also effective in attracting younger audiences because the retro theme is currently in fashion so therefore can be intriguing for a younger person to look at also. I decided to put the artist on the front cover as this vintage style is very basic, therefore I needed something visual to keep it exciting. These features ensure that the album cover maintains its genre style whilst attracting different demographics, as well as keeping it more interesting as the audience can take a look at the artist himself. To finalise this the 'remastered' writing would hopefully create more sales for my item because they know it is better quality than previously, however I believe this does not help promote my music video as it does not mention or advertise it in any way, which could possibly be an area to improve on.
The picture below was the main style of the album before adding in the glowing gold font.

Poster Design: What makes it attractive to an audience?

When designing my poster, I had to take into consideration it would most likely be a stand alone poster in a tube station for example. This meant I had to ensure it was a stand-alone design which promoted and effectively advertised the remastered album and video. For example, I gave further detail such as the platforms the album will be sold on (Vinyl and CD) and when it will be released. This information can guide the audience into wanting to know more details as they know when to look out for it, but not a vast amount of information past that; encouraging them to develop their understanding by looking it up. At this point the audience is most likely someone who was brought up with this music and are familiar, or someone who interested in the 'retro' theme that is becoming popular in todays youth.

Applying mise-en-scene

The combination of mise-en-scene throughout my products was essential to promote the new music video to bring back attention to an old album. It was also used to effectively show the audience the conceptual style I was creating to modernise such an old song which originally didn't have an official music video.
The mise-en-scene used in all aspects had connotations that linked to the video. For example, the moon seen in the inside panel of the album cover emphasises the 'night' in 'One of These Nights', as well as the guitar on the poster connoting to the genre of Classic Rock due to the guitars style which was very popular in 1970s and 1980s rock bands. This brings all of the products together to promote the purpose and style of the music video, and therefore promoting the music alongside that.
