La Candelaria, Bogotá

La Candelaria is the most emblematic place in Bogota. This 400-year-old site still retains its colonial architecture and is home to several of the capital's most important sites.

The neighborhood is known for having been the place where Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, a Spanish conquistador, founded what would later become the city of Bogotá.

Its houses have a colonial design, with a very colorful aesthetic and balconies, which were traditional in Spanish architecture, you will not find elsewhere in Bogota. Here lived historical figures such as the viceroy Sámano or the most important painter of the colony, Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos.

In La Candelaria there are buildings that date back centuries such as the Colon Theater founded in the late nineteenth century or the Church of Nuestra Señora de Las Aguas which was built between 1657 and 1694.

The Gold Museum, the Chorro de Quevedo and the Plaza de Bolivar are some of the most emblematic places you can visit. If you are a tourist, you can easily access tours where they will tell you about the importance of La Candelaria.

For many this neighborhood is not only history and culture, it also has a dark side. This place is known to be home to a multitude of cursed houses and ghosts that often frighten in the early hours of the morning.

The Central Cemetery of Bogota is the oldest in the capital. It was founded in 1836 when Francisco de Paula Santander, one of the greatest heroes of Colombian independence, was president.

Many illustrious figures are buried in this site. For example, the children's writer Rafael Pombo, the poet José Asunción Silva, the leftist leader assassinated in 1990, Carlos Pizarro, and presidents such as Eduardo Santos and Gustavo Rojas Pinilla.

Over the years, this cemetery has become a site of strong belief for Colombians and visitors alike. Hundreds of visits are registered to ask favors to the illustrious characters buried there and, of course, it also has its dark side, which has to do with witchcraft and black magic.

Located 38 km from the city of Bogota, it is possible to see what was once one of the greatest emblems of Cundinamarca: the Salto del Tequendama. This natural wonder is a huge waterfall with a drop of 180 meters.

The Salto del Tequendama is the mouth of the Bogota River and attracted a variety of visitors thanks to its beauty. However, something sad is that due to the pollution that was generated in the place, all the flora and fauna present there died.

This attraction over the years began to fade into the background and a site located in front of the waterfall began to steal all the attention, this place is the Hotel Salto del Tequendama. One of the most recognized sites in Colombia during the twentieth century was undoubtedly the Hotel Salto del Tequendama. It began its construction in 1923 and for years was characterized by providing lodging to the most privileged people in the country.

Thanks to its beautiful republican construction and because it is surrounded by a beautiful view where the imposing waterfall called Salto del Tequendama stands out, this place was frequently visited by many people. It is also worth noting that the house used to be a train station.

Gorgona Island, Cauca

This place was abandoned until 1959. In 1960, Colombian President Alberto Lleras Camargo, inspired by other terrible places like Alcatraz, decided to turn the island into a prison. To this prison they sent the most terrible prisoners of Colombia: murderers and rapists. Entering Gorgona Island implied a death sentence.

The inhumane conditions the prisoners were subjected to were terrible. They slept on wooden beds without mattresses or pillows and were constantly confronted with poisonous animals such as snakes that could attack them at any moment.

In addition, the chances of escape were nil, as they lived on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that was sometimes teeming with sharks. Many people died at that time.

Finally, in 1984, the Minister of Justice of that time, Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, promoted an initiative to demolish the place. Since then, paranormal phenomena have started to occur there.

Nobsa and the Aranda Cross

Nobsa is one of those towns in Boyacá that is worth visiting. Its simple architecture invites you to relax, its square is very nice and is covered with statues made of scrap metal.

Nobsa is known in Colombia for being a town where the traditional ruana is produced, even in 2009, 25 artisans made what is considered the largest ruana in the world. However, not everyone knows that this town has a history that is related to the devil and, later, to UFOs.
In Nobsa for centuries a phenomenon has been occurring that no one has been able to explain. Lights appear in the sky that to this day continue to frighten the locals.

These lights caused so much terror in the inhabitants of the town, that in a short time they began to blame the devil for producing this phenomenon. This is why in 1886, a priest named José Agustín Aranda built a cross on the highest part of the Tungón hill.

The truth is that this cross had no effect. The lights continue to appear. Even the original Aranda's Cross was destroyed a long time ago, so the locals have rebuilt it several times. Currently, the third version of this monument is still standing.

As the years went by, people stopped blaming the devil and since there was no logical explanation, little by little they began to suggest that what was happening in this place was due to the UFO phenomenon. Since then some inhabitants of Nobsa have had an enormous interest in extraterrestrials. They are so fond of the subject that even in their main park you can find an illustration that alludes to extraterrestrials.

La Casa del Diablo, Ciénaga

In the heritage town of Ciénaga we find a beautiful and unique architecture, so much so that this place is called the capital of magical realism. The Nobel Prize winner, Gabriel García Márquez, used this place as the basis for the creation of Macondo, the place where the events of the book One Hundred Years of Solitude take place.

Among so much beauty we find a place that even nowadays still scares locals and visitors: the Casa del Diablo (House of the Devil).

Legend has it that at the beginning of the 20th century, a man named Manuel Varela made a pact with the devil to obtain wealth. Don Manuel was a man of limited economic resources, who during the banana boom, quickly acquired a fortune that allowed him to buy land and hire a multitude of workers.

Rumors about this man began because children and his own workers were disappearing from his farm. In Ciénaga it is said that Manuel Varela made a pact in which the devil would give him riches and prosperity in exchange for the souls of his workers.

After his death in the mid 50's, his mansion, called Manuelita, began to be the subject of rumors and supposed paranormal phenomena, which is why it began to be called the House of the Devil.

Witnesses claim that there are diabolical forces living in that place. They claim that at night the grounds smell of sulfur and that it is possible to see terrifying red eyes peering out of the windows.

This "castle", which was actually the house of a large estate, is considered one of the most haunted places in Barranquilla.

The story goes that this house dates back to 1626 and belonged to a mestizo named Rondón. Supposedly this man worshipped pagan gods, performed black magic and even made pacts with the devil. It is said that Rondón was a terrifying looking man and that he had a chapel built where he performed black magic. Supposedly this terrible character sacrificed a multitude of people to offer them to his gods.

Years have passed, but nowadays it is said that terrifying things happen in this place. Supposedly Rondón had a black horse with which he harassed his victims and there are people who claim to have heard the footsteps of this animal in the wee hours of the morning.

There have also been apparitions of specters, such as that of an alleged woman dressed in white.
