Back in 2017 I went to visit the Shadow Puppet museum in Nakkon Si Thammarat, Southern Thailand where I saw how the shadow puppet was made and examples from various parts of South East Asia. I will be looking theatres and puppetry also inspired by large scale puppets and red curtains as well as my experience as a performer and how this merged with ideas of identity/ changing ideas of identity

I may have decided what I will be choosing for my project. After last weeks presentation at the museum I think the airman suit might be the pick. I learnt that it was made from aluminium and oil tanned leather created by Pittards and find its safety features quite inspiring. From the waterproof technology to down to its purpose to 'help save the lives of pilots who were forced to ditch their aircrafts" in WWII. 
I hope to invent something with a similar idea. Perhaps make a Cocoon that heals and keeps people comfortable and safe. 
It probably won't be like a butterfly Cocoon but the idea serve as a similar thing. In my next post I will start drawing a plan and thinking about other artifacts that could potentially develop and inspire a functioning design.

The seat was painted and covered in silver with studs and decorated with heavy Eastern floral patterns of its time. 

The seat itself is beautiful,  I think its sturdy and strong for these reason, and for the purpose of realising my idea I think this could be my second pick 🥳. The body of the chair has great potential to inspire a creative sturdy Cocoon that keeps people safe.

- Oil Paint

- Latex Paint
The best paint that works best of surfaces that are dry. A thin layer is to be applied, otherwise it is known to crack and peeling later down the line. 
- Enamel Paint
Smooth paint known to create a versatile finish. Its known not to leave any brush marks either. Two coats are only needed for a great finish. However, this is a highly popular technique used in the leather industry in creating designs onto the leather. It is important to perform test runs, which I will experiment with on the samples I received. 

Bill Amberg states that laser cutting can leave a black outline and brown tones around the cut, whereas water jet cutting doesn't. 

Suitable leathers:
- Full-grain leather
- Top grain leather
- Corrected grain (bottom/cut split leather)
- Bonded leather 

Pigmented, suede and Veg-tanned can also be used.

Veg-tanned leather is best because it is most absorbing. He states to stay away from chrome tanned leathers as these do not work with embossing and the emboss will raise back up. 

Embossing:
- Using a plate to create a raised image.

Debossing:
- Using a plate to create a depressed image.

I wish to experiment using a plate I am most familiar with and that is a linocut. I am open to trying a metal plate too to compare results.

Leather is a recycled/sustainable material and is known to be a by-product of the meat industry. This means that no animal is killed for its skin. If the leather industry did not come along, the skin would end up rotting in a landfill. 

There are still grades of skin:
Top - Grain
Middle - Fine complex fibres - water resistent
back - flesh - turns into splits and suede's. 

First challenge is preserving the skin in 'pickle form', which means it is salted and dried. The top skin is grade A and the bottom skin is grade D. This determines the quality to each skin and they look for scratches and discolouration, etc. 

Skin thickness is another aspect Pittards looks out for. 
- The skin on the back and neck is thickest
- The skin around the stomach, armpits, etc is the stretchiest.

Ethiopia is an non corrupt place full of consistent farming. Pittard's buys their sheep from small farms. Lower quality grades of leather is best printed on because it is cheaper and also it disguises any imperfections to the leather. Pittard's stated that their printed leather is more expensive than their Grade A non-printed leather.

- Plate placed on to plate 
- "Ramp Press"

Dwell time - 9-10 seconds (12 seconds approx)
Heat is adjusted too

Laminate printing transfers colours to the print.

Leather flower making day class with Guilia Mio Millinery was a great day using off cuts of leather and creating the flower of a lily. I was fortunate enough to take part in this class through the leather project. This was a class I never thought I would have the opportunity of taking. 

What is leather flower making?

Leather flowers are made from recycled off cuts of leather crafted into the appearance of flowers. I found this challenge to be very delicate and time consuming. A lot of time and skill goes into perfecting a flower made from leather. There are many tools and equipment that is needed to make these flowers which is when it becomes quite expensive. It is preferred that veg tanned leather is used for the flower making. This is because of the natural substances used through the tanning process. 

Veg-tanned leather is considered extremely adaptable and can be used for many different things such as clothes, footwear, flower making etc. because of its dynamic structures. These include engraving, dyed, embossing, printed and many more things. 

For the flower Lily, Guilia states she gets her leather from Pittard's which is a very sustainable respected leather company. It is known for its sustainable leather tanning of leather and leather is a by-product.

Guilia taught us every step in great detail on how to plan the leather lily. Flower making is very time consuming as it is so it is important to have everything planned and organised before starting.

Tools used at the class:
  - Leather scissors (these made cutting of leather simple and easy)
  - Leather glue (Stronger version of PVA) 
  - pattern paper (used as a guide to cutting leather)
  - Metal string (creates structure of the flower, acts like a spine for the flower)

I loved every moment to this class. The time, the effort and the delicacy that goes into every flower. It did not feel tedious, but enjoyable. I love a challenge, I get bored when something is over and done with quickly. I focus my projects around material and the process behind it and that is what I find most enjoyable.

What I admire most about the choice of flowers, was I tried to go for earthy colours that link well with nature. It turned out better than I expected because it looks like the Lily is made out of wood and the detail and the thickness to the leather makes it look realistic.

For the leather project, I am planning to create a 1960's chair (Possible butterfly chair) with an embossed reduction linocut printed on the back and the seat.
