During Hemodialysis, a machine filters wastes, salts and fluid from your blood when your kidneys are no longer healthy enough to do this work adequately. Signs and symptoms that may be indications include nausea, vomiting, swelling and fatigue. After treatment about once a month, patients will have blood tests to make sure they are getting the right amount of hemodialysis. Hypotension is the most common complication of hemodialysis. Long term complications of may include inadequate filtering of waste products, blood clot formation in the dialysis graft or fistula, as well as cardiovascular disease.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is another way to remove waste products from your blood when your kidneys can't anymore. A difference between Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis is that Peritoneal Dialysis allows self treatment at home. Yet this isn't an option for everybody facing kidney failure because the person must have the ability to care for themselves or a care giver that is reliable. Performing the process of peritoneal dialysis is called an exchange and a person will usually go through 4-6 exchanges per day. First they fill the peritoneal cavity with Dialysis fluid. Then, extra fluid and waste travels across the peritoneal membrane and into the dialysis fluid. It is then drained after a few hours and replaced with new fluid. Peritoneal Dialysis has different types and the treatment method is usually decided together with the patients doctor to determine which method will work best for them.
