• Ensure the reader knows what makes a book good for them.

The concept that books and reading are enriching individuals' lives rather than simply providing an escape is something I feel passionate about sharing.

I am most uncomfortable asking the reader to tell me why they enjoyed a book because it can seem intrusive and like I am putting them on-the-spot if they are not feeling up to thinking and exploring in this way.

Ensuring the readers know what makes a good book for them, is one of the reader's advisory goals that is challenging in my work where trying to assist the library customers with finding their next read is not always easy. Sometimes what we think as librarians that our suggestions most likely will be accepted that's not always the case with our library customers. Therefore, i like the question " what's the latest book that you really loved and enjoyed" is really a good strategy to help our readers with finding their next read.

I'm always keen on finding the next read for the readers, it's so nice seeing the readers are happy and looking forward to coming back to the library because there's nothing better than knowing that the library is the place where you can chat to someone who likes books and they are happy to help you finding something new and exciting to read.

Although I find it challenging to expand a reader's options outside their own understanding mostly because my own knowledge is limited but like everything it takes both time and persistence's. but by asking both the other staff, using other resources available and just general conversation with patrons to further my knowledge will in turn be able to help others do the same as well.

I feel the least confident with Goal 3 - Provide the reader with next book options. Even though I have worked in libraries for 35 years I still find this part hard when I don't know the customer well and what they normally read.

Most Challenging

• Increasing the reader’s appreciation for the reading life has to be the most challenging because the Australia Reads Executive Summary recommends we focus on infrequent readers. I feel we haven't really learned to tackle this group in the Novelist training.

I think the challenge will be managing the reader’s expectations of providing the next book options on the spot or immediately which is most often what is expected. So far during this course I have taken the time to consider the next book options with a reasonable amount of research which I have found time consuming. I look forward to my skills increasing in this area and becoming a little more efficient in this process.

Facilitating our library Book Group has expanded my reading list, and it's such a great way to share insights into what makes a good book. It's a really good learning process for me as far as RA work goes.

The challenge about Reader's Advisory I find is the time pressure of coming up with suggestions, often you are juggling multiple tasks and it is not the relaxed environment portrayed in these examples. Still, it is enjoyable to learn about the different strategies we can utilise. And I look forward to being able to expand my talking points with customers.
