It shows their intelligence on the island and how that group is off to a good path on their journey on the island. In the middle, when one of the lens broke, it represents how the group is starting to break down and collapse from being their so long and since they lost on of the lens, a part of them has been lost as well. After Jack steals them, they mean power and control over the boys and the island. They originally meant logic and intelligence over the boys but now that Jack has stolen them, they mean power.
