i did not take a selfie at the opening because i felt way too awkward doing so (i felt awkward enough taking the pictures i did since it was a bit crowded), but i will post pictures i personally took featuring the other artists’ work. it was the very first show at this newly opened space and was a very lively and fun environment. this show is the first of a series of three exhibitions featuring locally based and celebrated baltimore artists, with a full length book detailing their significance to baltimore. the artists featured in this show were joe m. giordano, phaan howng, and erin fostel. i already look to phaan howng as she is inspiring for me to look at for my own work, but her large paintings were full of immense depth and vibrant colors compared to looking at images online. i’m also already familiar with erin fostel’s intricately beautiful charcoal drawings, they were on another level to witness in person as well. joe m. giordano is an artist i was not familiar with before attending. he mainly photographs the fall of the steel industry through decaying factories in black and white.
the way we can see how each artist physically views the world is intriguing to comprehend through their work. it was fascinating to see their works in person as each artist accomplishes their respective crafts very well, all offering different perspectives to art-making!

gallery visit in place of Krystle Lemonias’s talk

I (very unfortunately D:) missed Lemonias’s talk on 3/14 since I had an opening at the Chesapeake Arts Center. On 3/16 I visited Zo Gallery to see works on view by Alfonso Fernandez and Andrew Paul Keiper.
Fernandez was there the day I visited and we were able to discuss the captivating nature of his haunting imagery, which tackled the effects of migration and displacement and how that very negatively effects families and people that seek a new life, and how this is grossly underrepresented in American society.
The effects of war and targeted cultural violence highlight these dark outcomes, and is highlighted and complemented by Keiper’s photographs of dilapidated nature and the physical effects of war on our environment. The sound art in the space made for an apocalyptic atmosphere that was fitting with the themes of both artists’ works.
