From the start of the novel many of the citizens were faced with having to know and adapt to the Party’s slogan. The government promotes contradictory ideas like "War brings peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength," which undermines individuality by confusing people's beliefs and preventing them from thinking independently. They did not have the choice to freely think amongst themselves, but it was more that they were taught to believe and go by this slogan. It had to be incorporated into their daily life, leading to many people not having this sense of individuality within their own thoughts and feelings.

The party has always been able to manipulate the people. This passage demonstrates how Winston's role in rewriting history, a task assigned by the Party is once again manipulating many of those citizen. The big issue surround Goldstein, is that he is seen as an enemy through many of the citizens. This was once again taught to them since they were brought into the world. The Party does not agree with the standings of Goldsteins because he is seen as a rebel who has his own thoughts and feelings. By blaming Goldstein, the government distracts people from its own faults and keeps the citizens in line. This makes people afraid to be different or speak out, so they just go along with whatever the government says, losing their own individuality.

Once again the readers are faced with the same idea of, when the government controls what people think, it takes away their ability to be themselves and have their own ideas. This kind of control makes everyone think and act the same, without room for personal expression or freedom of thought.

This passage highlights how sexual intercourse in the Party was an act of rebellion against them. Within this passage, it highlights how no emotion was pure. Every emotion that the citizens were forced to feel were fear and hatred. Fear, for the war, for the Party, for the Thought police. This emotion was the only emotion anyone could ever see. This dehumanization and lack of individuality was strongly demonstrated as the chapters went on within the novel. Many of the civilians did not even seem like people anymore. They seemed more as robots, following rules and laws, while being stuck in the same routine over and over again. When Winston and Julia both decide to show their rebellion by having sex, it showed their human side of emotions that were not like the rest. This not only bonded them together, but it showed how they both wanted to rebel and try to find themselves again amongst all these people that felt as if everything was right when it truly was not.

But with inventions like printing, film, radio, and especially television, governments could influence people’s thoughts and behaviors more easily. The Party wants the citizens not mattering their status within society, to follow all of the Party’s principles and beliefs.

Initially, Winston feels a surge of hope and attachment to life, prompting a change in behavior where avoiding unnecessary risks becomes a priority. Winston knows the risk that having these feelings can create within his life. If the thought police were to catch him, he would vanish immediately for not following the rules of the Party. He knew that even having emotions was showing his human side the Party had worked so hard to blur and dehumanize with their rules and beliefs. These emotions showed a sense of individuality because these words mean a lot more then just the ordinary routine. The Party had banned such emotions, that when Winston saw it he knew something had shifted.

Once Winston realized that he should rebel against the Party for his own good, he started to feel like a human. He started to feel like a different person. He saw different perspectives of how the government would truly treat them. This feeling of wanting to rebel, had finally brought Winston into the harsh dehumanize reality that he had lived in because of the Party.
