Jeffers wrote notes to his newborn son to explain the world around him. The result is a book that explains biology, astronomy, science, humanity, and the overarching message is kindness and community. His illustrations are also amazing.

I picked this book because it resonated with me as a mom trying to explain the world to a kid. But also because the message of being connected to the earth, the universe, animals, and people is so important. Now more than ever.

This book isn't a picture book but I'm reading it currently and I figured it would be a great book to share with older kids. This book discusses important issues regarding race and it's also very interesting because the writing style is very honest and raw. Great read if you ever get the chance :)

Hello! So this is a story about a prince who twist his words. It is a French book! I like it for three main reasons:

VOCAB, VOCAB, VOCAB! It's a great story that teaches so many French common vocabulary words! It's great for FLS learners

It’s not easy for kids to doze off since it’s a very interactive story. Kids are actively listening to the story since they have to not only listen to the context of the words but try to figure out what the Prince is actually trying to say. It’s a fun, easy story that acts as a puzzle at the same time.

Students can analyze the pictures of the story to try and guess what he is saying. This is helpful for those who may have a bit more difficulty reading.

Here is a PDF version of the story that I found online. You can try and read it as well! https://padlet-uploads.storage.googleapis.com/293762411/d03c37aa419c20e18448c8f50cb216d2/La_belle_lisse_poire_de_prince_de_motordu.pdf

Émilie Vriend's Book Pick: Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Coraline is a dark fantasy novel with some illustrations scattered throughout. It would be more axed towards grade 6 students. The book follows Coraline, a young girl who has moved to a new house and feels extremely isolated from her parents who don’t listen or pay enough attention to her. She discovers a passage to a mirror version of her house, family, and neighbours which all seem more exciting at first, but soon become sinister. Coraline has to overcome her feelings of helplessness and establish her own power and identity so she can save her parents from her Other Mother. I didn't read this book until I took a Children's Literature class in my undergraduate program, but I think it has some really important themes (identity, isolation, mental health, self-empowerment). I think it’s really important to introduce children to darker material because it helps them to better acknowledge and cope with difficult situations and emotions, even mental health, and as teachers we can help them establish support systems early on in life so that they don’t feel isolated the way that Coraline does in the book.

It's repetitive enough that my kids can follow along, with illustrations that are colourful, bright, and with enough detail that my children find something new each time. There are a large cast of characters, so I get to use lots of voices while reading it. But my absolute favourite thing is the delightful rhyming scheme and bouncy meter that makes it a joy to read. It's impossible for me to read it to my children and not feel at least somewhat cheerful.

It’s a picture book written by Jory John and illustrated by Pete Oswald. The book is about a seed who does some pretty bad things. He has a bad temper, bad manners, and a bad attitude. He’s been bad since the day he can remember! He’s friends with nobody and mean to everybody. In the book, the bad seed lives a traumatic experience of nearly being eaten as an infant so it’s clear how the seed had become a different seed entirely. Until one day the seed makes a big decision and decides that he wants to be happy. The bad seed reflected on his behaviour and changed his mind about himself. As his self-esteem grows and attitude improves, the other seeds begin to see the seed in a new light.
The main idea of the book is to promote self-management and social awareness. I like the idea of how the story implies the importance of self-reflection and how a positive attitude towards one’s self is correlated with good outcomes because positive change starts from within. I really like the digitized watercolor and I chose this book to talk about because it’s a funny yet touching tale that reminds us of the transformative power of will, humility, and the chance to make a change for the better.

Anne of Green Gables - by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Genre: Novel, Coming-of-Age
In this classic children's novel, Anne, an orphan, ends up being adopted (accidentally) by Marissa and her brother, Matthew. This is a coming-of-age novel that follows Anne's trials and adventures as she grows up in a town on P.E.I. around the end of the 19th century. I really enjoyed this book when I was younger - I found Anne to be such an interesting and exciting character whom I looked up to. She is unique and imaginative, and she always has lots to say. She is always dreaming and romanticizing, which I found relatable as a kid. I think this is a really fun read with an endearing storyline.
Quote: "Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive - it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for the imagination then, would there?"

Dunford with Tobin Island School of Fine Art

This story book is great to read to students as it promotes understanding and appreciation of Inukshuks of the Inuit people in Canada. The setting is Northern Ontario and the Inukshuk named Chucky is lonely as people don't say hello to him. This changes when he shelters two young kids from a storm, and he becomes happy.

Why I chose the book: A unique element is that members of the Tobin School of Fine Art contributed art to the book. Thus, the book showcases art of various skill levels including 2 children, which can serve as artistic inspiration for students.

Becca Deschamps
By: Zoe Tucker
Illustrated by: Zoe Persico
Genre: Picture book

Inspired by Greta Thunberg's story. Greta is threatened by giants, when they come to her home in the forest to chop down the trees and build houses. The keep chopping until there is a city and almost no trees left. Alone, Greta decides to take the giants on, but is ignored until others begin to join her. The giants then decide to listen and soon realize the destruction they have done. The giants stop, and together they work to rebuild the forest.

I chose this book because I like how it takes a real story and turns it into a fairytale that can be read to children. Also, I'm a big fan of Greta Thunberg.

Name: Erica Warriner
Book Title: What Do You Do With a Problem?
Author: Kobi Yamada
Illustrator: Mae Besom
Genre: Picture book

This is a picture book about a boy who faces a problem in life. He first meets the problem with frustration and then anxiety, but over time learns acceptance and how to turn the problem into an opportunity.

I chose this book because the topic is something that's applicable to all ages. It helps to teach children self-care skills that will be useful for the rest of their lives. Even adults struggle with not getting bogged down by their problems and trying to see the silver-lining so it's never too late to learn!
