Explorer Route Map

Use an online mapping tool like Google Earth, to trace the routes of famous explorers and save each route into a "project." You will analyze different components like distance traveled, time of each journey, and possible geographical barriers each explorer may have experienced. These reflections will be logged into a Google Document.

European Exploration Impact Debate

You will take part in a structured debate that discusses the positive and negative impacts of European exploration. You will research and present arguments from varying perspectives. Post your main points onto a Google Jamboard on either the positive "board" or negative "board." Include your points along with your name on each sticky note you create. Post up to 4 total points.

Unit Reflection Journals

Keep a digital journal on the platform Penzu, where you document any questions, thoughts, or insights they have throughout the European exploration unit. These will be shared with the teacher at the end of the unit.

You will create a soundtrack or playlist that would likely represent the emotions or experiences of various European explorers on their journeys. You can select music (create a playlist on Spotify and share) or create your own compositions with a program like GarageBand.

Navigation Obstacle Course

You will navigate through an obstacle course (physical or digital) with challenges that represent the struggles early European explorers would have experienced. You will work together and use problem-solving skills to overcome the obstacles to reach the destination. These could include using navigation skills to route a course, or using simple machine knowledge to design tools you may need for your journey. This will remind you of the physical/mental nature of an explorer's struggles on their journeys.

Use Canva to make your own maps before and after European exploration. You may consult with other print/digital resources in order to label continents and oceans on their map, as well as the exploration routes of various explorers.

Nature Walk/Journal

Use a specialized application like PictureThis to identify different plants, and observation to identify various (common) animals around your home. Keep a digital nature journal where you chart which plants and animals you come across in the day-to-day are native to the Americas and which are not. You will then do a final reflection on how the Columbian Exchange has impacted our natural world. Journal entries can be made in any previously mentioned platform (Google Docs, Penzu, Google Slides, etc.)
