Charlie Wooderson
1. The policy itself was a military-led border security initiative, which, among other things, would lead to boats being turned back "if safe to do so"
2. Turnbacks are where the boat would be turned around and placed outside the territorial waters of their country of department
3. The other type of turnback, the Takeback, is where the Australian government would work with the country of departure to return the refugees.
4. Due to the government's lack of transparency, it isn't clear if they checked the status of those on board, or if they allowed the chance to raise the claim for asylum.
5. There are differing opinions on the safety of the turnback operations, with the government saying it prevents dangerous trips to Australia by boat, while government workers saying the operations themselves are fairly dangerous.
