I believe I was successful in shading the sunglasses, and creating dimension in my hair. I used a range of very dark and very light tones to mimic the highlights and reflections. However, if to go back and redo this I would reprint the word shady to go over my hand rather than my mouth/nose area. Additionally, I found carving around the calligraphy the most difficult part of this process.

I think one thing I was successful in was realistically constructing my face and keeping the proportions true to size. One thing particularly challenging for me was keeping the charcoal from shifting, so I ended up redrawing parts multiple times. Going back I think I would make more of an effort to be bolder with the shadows and darker sections, as right now it seems very flat in tone and 2 dimensional. My favorite part was probably carving the calligraphy, I really enjoyed using the linoleum and printing with it.

I think what went very successfully was drawing my hair. Incorporating details in my hair and incorporating my headband in this picture went extremely well. However, I struggled when drawing my face. It was hard to make sure the face looked more "natural" and parts of the face were not out of proportion. However, my design pulled through, and I am very proud.

In this project, I was challenged by the unfamiliarity with charcoal drawings. I had to learn how to shade with charcoal and after many attempts, my skin tone came out darker than what I wanted. Even though my charcoal shading was not exactly how I wanted it, I learned a new method of drawing, so the overall drawing was a huge success. My print was also successful because it resulted in the way I wanted with the red standing out with the staggered letters looking like blood. Overall, I have expanded my knowledge of art as a whole, so this term was a success.

What was challenging for me was adding the shading for the face. It was hard not to add too much and when I did I often went back and made it too light. I think the printing of the word was very successful, I like the way it turned out!

I found the coloring/painting of the background not necessarily successful, but it was very satisfying and fun to mess around with. I found multiple things a bit more challenging though. Some things were making the r and v in brave pop out more and not rubbing away all the color from my selfie.

One thing that I found difficult about this project was drawing the fine details of the portrait because of the medium with which we worked. The charcoal was much thicker and less predictable than the regular 8B pencils we used in the past, so it took a lot of getting used to before I was able to get the hang of it. Nonetheless, I feel like once I had done enough experimenting I had pretty good control over the charcoal, and I was able to get down the close details pretty accurately. I feel like my proportions came out nicely, because I spent a lot of time working with the grid. I also really like the way I did my print and my background, because the bright colors really contrasted with the simplicity of the portrait.

At first, creating the mist effect with my blue watercolor paint was really hard because I didn’t quite understand proper technique on how to use watercolor. But as I kept painting, the water color settled into a nice gradient which I’m proud of. However, getting this gradient took a lot of time and precision. I’m also proud of my charcoal shading because I think it shows the lighter and darker contrasts really well. In the end, although this was probably one of the most challenging assignments, I’m really proud of this art piece. It’s my favorite piece I’ve created this entire term. Also, the word at the top is supposed to say "LIVE". I tried to do a fancy font with it.

I think I was successful with the self portrait aspect of my piece. I enjoyed working with charcoal as well as using the grid method. I feel like I could've done better with the water color pencils as I was a little rushed. With more time, I would have blended my colors a little more to make it more appealing. The printmaking aspect of this project was time consuming but enjoyable in the end.
