Person first Language

Do not forget to use person first language when writing about the students in your learning segments with learning needs. Person first language means you always mention the person first before talking about a disability designation. If you are using the information from the edTPA chart about learning needs during your learning segment, you might say, "There are 3 students participating in the learning segment with a learning disability in math." or "There are 2 students participating in the learning segment who have difficulty with visual processing." You would never say, "During the learning segment, I will have 3 learning disabled students in the group."

What exactly is an IEP? What is the difference between the roles of the General Education Teacher and the Special Education Teacher?

The acronym IEP means different things to different people.

If you are a general ed curriculum teacher and have a student in your class with an IEP, what type of information do you think the IEP will give you?

A student with a disability who has an IEP has qualified for one of the 13 disability categories and there is evidence that the student requires specialized instruction.

The IEP consists of many documents. The DEC 4 of the IEP outlines where, when, how and by whom a student with a disability will be educated. It is a plan of specialized instruction.

Special education teachers provide specialized instruction. General education teachers provide instruction in the general curriculum.

Special ed teachers integrate general curriculum and general ed teachers integrate strategies to meet needs. Their roles are different and the way they use the IEP is different.

The general ed teacher is provided a copy of the DEC 4 by the special ed teacher so they know if the student needs accommodations and modifications in the general classroom. The gen ed teacher needs to know the goals, strengths and needs outlined in the IEP for that student.

The special ed teacher must facilitate, monitor and carry out the specialized instructional program outlined in the IEP.

The IEP is a backed by federal law which is why you must always make sure that anything outlined in that plan is provided to that student. This could be something as simple as the student requiring written copies of all lecture notes. If it is in the IEP, you have to do it to be in compliance with federal law.

As the general ed teacher, you are constantly progress monitoring, meeting needs of a variety of students and using data to drive instruction. There are many ways to collect this information. The IEP has information about specialized needs. Your general ed assessment data is going to give you information about needs on particular learning targets.
