Netiquette #1- Make Yourself Look Good Online

This netiquette stresses the importance of knowing what you're talking about while online and how to ensure that what you're saying makes sense.

I chose this netiquette because I feel it is so necessary for students to be aware and cautious of what they post online. People may interpret their writing differently if they don't take the time to fully understand what they are trying to express. Also punctuality is a big factor in writing and students may overlook it sometimes, which can make them look careless.

Communicating through the internet is definitely advantageous in some aspects. For example, you will not be judged on your appearance, your race, your weight, or any other physical characteristic you posses. You will solely be judged on the quality of your writing. Spelling and grammar are an essential part of any kind of writing so it is important to make yourself familiar with the basic components of it. If it is something you struggle with make sure you reach out and use resources to help guide you.
The content of your writing is just as important as the spelling and grammar in it. This netiquette expresses how it is crucial for the writer to fully understand what they are talking about before they post their writing. Getting information from proper resources and fact checking plays a huge part in this. Bad information causes confusion and frustration. It is also very important to re-read your writing to make sure it follows some sort of structure. If your writing has no flow to it and it is all over the place then the reader will not be able to understand it.

Netiquette #2- Be Careful With Humor and Sarcasm

This netiquette is important because there is a fine line between being funny and being rude. People can always interpret things the wrong way over online text, so understanding how to bring personality into your writing without hurting or offending anyone is definitely important.

I believe this netiquette is important to teach to students because it is so easily overlooked and in this generation people often take things the wrong way and become offended over comments that were genuinely innocent.

Personality truly defines a person and it is so important to express your personality through your writing. This netiquette is not telling you that you can't be funny or sarcastic in your writing, it is simply saying that you need to know your audience. Using images or things of that sort can help convey your humor to the audience correctly so there is no misunderstanding.

Netiquette #3- Don’t post or share (even privately) inappropriate material

This netiquette holds true for every internet user. Nothing is actually private that you post online, even if you have your profile marked as private. Posting something that can be seen as inappropriate by any user should not be posted anywhere. As a result of all the social media platforms today, nothing is really private.

I believe this netiquette is important for students to learn, as well as all internet users because one post can have a huge impact on your life. If something you post is inappropriate and someone views the post such as a school administrator, or other authority figure, you could get into trouble that could effect your life down the road. Even though you may think that a post is private on your account, other people can show their friends and the post can spread around to others and therefore is no longer private.

I personally find this netiquette very relevant to my life because as an athlete, I am very cautious about what I post because it could effect my eligibility to play volleyball if I were to post a picture of myself where alcohol was also present. As for future employers, I would not want them to see anything inappropriate on my account and judge me based off of a negative post.

Sometimes over typing, words may be viewed by the recipient in other ways than intended by the sender. This netiquette expresses the importance of thinking before you type and thinking about how you would feel if someone said that to you. It is easier to saying something unkind to another person over the internet than it is to say it to their face.

This netiquette is important for students to learn and practice because students will disagree with their peers while conversing online. It is necessary for students to learn how to appropriately express their opinions in a way that is respectful to the other person along with accurately expressing their thoughts.

I chose this netiquette because I have had disagreements with my friends online, and was sometimes hard to find a way to appropriately respond without being disrespectful. When conversing online with classmates, it wasn't until my later years in school that I learned ways to properly respond and I wish that I had learned earlier on.

I would teach this netiquette to my students by presenting three or four profiles to the students that each contained posts of activities, or tweets that a fake twitter user has posted. Each of these accounts represents someone that is applying for a job and the students will choose who to hire. Each account would have varying pictures that may be red flags to future employers, or things that they might not want others to know about simulating how nothing is really private. One account will be all positive and nothing that is inappropriate, while the other accounts will have some red flags Example: Tweeting about how they were late to class or skipped class. I would have the students chose who they would hire and explain why they would not choose the other users based off of their twitter profile.

I would teach the essence of this netiquette to students through a lesson where we would all be involved in creating an online blog of some kind. I would instruct this lesson kind of like a writers workshop. I would chose a topic for the class to write about and as a group we will all brainstorm ideas about how to organize our thoughts and connect the ideas in a clear way. I would also go over the essential rules of spelling and grammar and make sure my class knew the basics of it. After the class felt comfortable enough doing a collaborative blog, I would then assign them to do one of their own individually and I would have them submit it to me and I would see if they understood the importance of making themselves look good online through writing.
