Jim "Jamie" Graham is a young British boy living in Shanghai during World War 2. At the start of the war, he's separated from his parents when the Japanese invade, and he got captured and taken to a prison camp.

At first Jim is short fused and sheltered, but the harsh experiences in the camp force him to grow up quickly. He faced many challenges, learns to survive, and forms a close but complicated relationship with Basie, an older American prisoner.

Throughout the film, Jim loses his childhood innocence, but he also becomes stronger and more adapted. By the end of the story, the war ends, and Jim is still alive, though he didn't reunite with his parents on screen. Instead, the focus is on how much he's changed and matured through his difficult journey.
