The poster was chosen to advertise the left-leaning Daily Herald newspaper. The bright colours and ascending birds can be read as a symbol of the renewal of post-war Britain. The new and progressive is also representative of Kauffer himself, who was born in Evansville, Indiana. In his creative work, his lifestyle and his attitude to sexuality, he made the virtues of modernity distinct. Renewal, a break with the past and traditional art and design led him to experiment with line, form, space and colour. What struck me was the staging of the poster in the exhibition space. The red frame extends into the space and emphasises the sense of movement and energy that the poster design sets.

The artwork is shown as part of a photo exhibition about so-called "selfies". It questions self-representation and invented or real narratives. The artist combines Catholic iconography and webcam voyeurism and presents herself as a holy icon and object of desire. She is responding to racist and sexist stereotypes towards black women. I chose it because it is particularly relevant in the context of the current pandemic to think about the representation of distinct identities, online and offline.

I decided to include this landmark mural for two reasons: firstly, it is really beautiful, and secondly, it is a work of art that is open to the public. This was part of the design process and the publishor's wish. Its installation took six months before it was finally unveiled in 1916, and critics at the time called it “a veritable wonder-piece”. It was to be sold in 1998, but an outcry from the citizens of Phildalphia prevented this. Just as it was 100 years ago, it stands today in the lobby of a hotel, with a bench in front of it and piano music in the background.

This photograph can be read on many different levels. First and foremost, it is the work of a professional photographer from the 1920s who embodies the "New Women". It is a fashion photograph that focuses on the subject's hat by playing with light and background. Fashion photography provided many artists with a stable income and support for their distinct businesses. As with the Kauffer poster design, I find it very fascinating when art and commerce come together in advertising. In both cases, it encourages experimentation and individual expression.
