Even though he wants to see his family I don’t think that it’s worth the risk of getting sick or even killed. In the text it states, "..there is still war near Loun Ariik, my son. If you went there, both sides would try to force you to fight with them. You must not go.” (Park,106). Savla should listen to what his father had said and stay away from Loun Ariik due to the fact that he could get hurt or even have to fight in the war with the sides.

When Salva flies to Sudan to see his ill father, Mawien Dut Ariik he tells Salva his mother is still alive and at the village. In chapter 18, it states, “And all those years I never knew that I was sitting on top of this good water!” Everyone around him laughed. Nya laughed, too.”(Park, 113) This textual evidence shows that by the power of the happiness brought by water, the community grew closer together by sharing a common thought of how happy they were to find the water, and sharing a good laugh of it. It is also shown that in the book, water brought the rival tribes together by showing an alliance of the Dinka people giving the gift of water to the Nuer people as a sign of alliance. Therefore, the power of water brings people together, as expressed in the book rather than breaking the community apart.

I think that Salva should ignore his father’s requests and go see his family. I think this because Salva has been a lost boy and has not seen his family over years. Even though he is taking the risk in going back into the war area, I think that he should do anything for his family. Family always comes first.  In the text it states, “There is still war near Loun-Ariik, my son. If you went there, both sides would try to force you to fight with them,” (Park, 106). This shows that it is dangerous for Salva to go. But, I think he should go because he never knows what will happen to his family in the future.

  • When Nya asks her father what is being built, he responds with “Can’t you guess?” Nya’s father is referring to building a school. It was stated that her fathers says “With the well here, no one will have to go to the pond anymore. So all the children will be able to go to school” (Park 103). Most of the children in her village were unable to go to school since the “nearest school was half a day’s walk from their home” (Park 103). This shows that Nya and the other children (all genders) were now given the opportunity to learn how to read and write. Since the well was built, all children didn’t have to have the responsibility of fetching water for their families. They would be able to go to school and have more free time instead of spending most of the day getting water.

Salva’s father stayed in the village the entire time, so he has seen what can possibly happen to people. Salva is now at the age where he can serve in the military. Salva being a military-aged male gives the possibility that both sides would want to recruit him.  In the text it states, “"There is still war near Loun-Ariik, my son. If you went there, both sides would try to force you to fight with them. You must not go." This quote gives an example of why Salva shouldn’t go to Sudan. If Salva were to visit his family in Sudan, he would most likely be recruited either side to fight, and be killed.

I’m pretty sure Salva’s family would rather not see him for a while than having him risk his life to come back to the village. I know this because in chapter 17 it states, “There is still war near Loun-Ariik, my son. If you went there, both sides would try to force you to fight with them. You must not go” (Park, 106). This quote shows that his father doesn’t want Salva to risk anything just for his family and wants him to stay away from Loun-Ariik for a while.

Knowing what Salva has already been through and how far he has come, I don’t think going down to see his family is worth it. At the same time, I think seeing his family is also well deserved because the main reason Salva survived is because of the memories of his family.

This question is fairly easy to guess because when seeing that a waterbole is being made this means that Nya will no longer have to fetch water. Nay’s chore of fetching water was always stopping her from getting her education. Now that she no longer has to fetch water, she can go to school and learn. Therefore he is working to build a school for his family. To back this up in the text Nyas reaction is, “Nyas eyes widened. The  nearest school was half a day's walk from their home. The need for water is a very powerful motivation, people have put water as a number one priority in front of other basic needs. The scarce amount of water isn’t enough for everyone, thus, conflict occurs. With so many people needing water, they begin to split apart and thrive for themselves and sometimes fight each other to gain access to water.
