Dennis and Francis said that they were so nice and they gave them shelter and food. Marco Polo also said that the people in Iran were very hospitable. A difference between the 13th century Iran and the 21st is the valley of assassins. In the 13th century in that valley would live people who when they were told to kill someone they would do it for money. Marco Polo sailed on a large ship and Dennis and Francis rode on a container ship. A difference between them is that Marco Polo got stranded on a different island for a few months. It was used for a census and when someone died they would strike their name off the door. When a child was born they would add their name to the door.  People did that in the 13th century and they still do now. A difference is the ability to buy a camel. In the 13th century it was very easy to buy a camel because it was the main form of transportation. Both Marco Polo and the Americans were attacked by Mongols. Marco Polo was attacked at the beginning of his journey before he sees Kublai Khan and gets his medallion that says he can travel wherever he wants. Dennis and Francis were attacked by the decedents of the Mongols. A difference would be that Dennis and Francis would not go on to work for the Mongols but Marco Polo would. The difference is the type. When Marco Polo traveled all he needed was the gold medallion given to him by Kublai Khan. Even then, regular people who were traveling didn't need a medallion. He just had one because he was working for the emperor. Denis and Francis had a modern day passport because that is needed to go places in the modern world. They also had to obtain visas, which give you permission to enter different countries. They also had a much more difficult time crossing the borders. It shows a man pushing a rock up a hill. It would require a lot of continues effort and not giving up to push a rock up a hill. This picture is representative of Dennis and Francis' journey.
