The hoses were not connected inside the factory. "A foreman ran for the hose on the stairway wall. Nothing! No water came. The hose had not been connected to the standpipe. Seconds later, the fire leaped out of control. '' During the fire the doors were also locked from the outside. In paragraph 7 it states,"Those who reached the ninth-floor stairway door found it locked. This was not unusual, as employers often locked doors to discourage latecomers and keep out union organizers." the firefighters tried their best to help those in need but with their limited resources and technology they couldn't save everyone. In paragraph 11 and 12 it states that, "Yet nothing they did could save those at the windows...A burst of water under high pressure would have hurled them backward, into the flames. ''The firefighters also had difficulty with their ladders,"The aerial ladders failed, too, reaching only to the sixth floor." This was a terrible tragedy, one that could been prevented if the correct measures were in place.

Back then the manger would lock the doors to the stairs to keep people in and out.
