Battling mental anxiety is one of the struggles many of us face during this trying time. The prospect of the unknown and impending threat just behind the threshold of our homes have created a virtual monster that many of us are afraid to confront.
Consider the lockdown not as a forced confinement but an opportunity to reinforce our relationships.
The fact is it has given us a huge gift: TIME. Isn't it ironic that another word for actual time is "PRESENT"?
Presents are given mainly to ENJOY.
You don't even have to do something out of the ordinary since the daily routine will already provide you with this opportunity. Here are just some:
a) Sharing meals together. Why not come up with a new recipe? Watch Youtube and learn from the cooking experts. It's fun and it's delicious.
b) Watching films together. Pop-corn time! Who doesn't enjoy a collective laugh, cry and scare time?
c) Play boardgames/cardgames. Time to bring down the old favorites like Monopoly, Scrabble, Pictionary or Jeopardy and roll those dice!
d) Hobby Time. You have set aside those cut outs, stamps, buttons, matchboxes and trinkets in the hope of putting them together in a scrapbook, diorama or frames for miniature settings. Stop procrastinating and bring out your creative juice.
(While writing this blog, my wife pulled out a an Italian Learning Kit which was buried inside her closet. I don't remember where I bought it but the tag price tells me I got it for a great bargain. Time to brush up my "arrivederci" skills).
e) Make those Videocalls! No more excuses. When was the last time you called your parents? A friend with whom you regret having a fall out? Time to heal those misunderstandings. There is no harm in sharing your present anxieties with people you care about. Remember, when you share worries, they diminish and when you share joys, they multiply.
Social Distancing is a tennet the lockdown demanded from us and although it has set spatial boundaries among us, it has opened a virtual platform without frontiers.
