It was originally New Netherlands when the Dutch owned it. Fertile land and large harbors attracted settlers to the middle colonies. Peter Stuyvesant expanded New Netherlands into New Jersey, also with Delaware. He also conquered New Sweden in 1655. Slaves were actually allowed to buy freedom. But they had to keep paying so they can be free. New Amsterdam became New York and was claimed by the Duke of York. From then everything was still okay but sometimes people would separate and soon had many places that had multiple religions.
Once people settled down their were mall fights about religions just because they had multiple religions everywhere.
