The model was created in 1923 by E.W. Burgess and is also known as the burgess model. It shows how a city grows outward in a series of rings, like the growth of a tree. The first ring is the CBD, the second ring is the zone of transition, the third ring is the zone of independent market homes, the fourth ring is the zone of better residences, and the last ring is the commuters zone.

The sector model was developed in 1939 by Homer Hoyt and is also known as the Hoyt Model. It shows how a city develops in a series of sectors, not rings. As a city grows, activities expand out wards in a wedge from the center of the model. It consists of five sectors, the CBD, Factories/Industries, Low class residential, Medium class residential, and High class residential. As you can see as it gets farther away from the model, you can clearly see the wedges.
