Teaching children about media literacy, including how to create and communicate online, could contribute to a participatory culture, as it would allow children to carefully produce publications, such as blogs, videos etc. about the things that are important to them. This would allow them to create communities working towards positive goals and changes that they would like to see in the world. If taught well enough, media literacy would allow children to evaluate which publications and messages are positive contributions to this process, and which are not.

Participatory culture is an opposing concept to consumer culture — in other words a culture in which private individuals (the public) do not act as consumers only, but also as contributors or producers (prosumers). The term is most often applied to the production or creation of some type of published media. Recent advances in technologies (mostly personal computers and the Internet) have enabled private persons to create and publish such media, usually through the Internet. Participatory cultures reward participation. 'Not everyone must participate, but everyone must believe that if they participate it will be valued.' The author is Mr Jenkins. Learning by sharing. In the context in which we live it has become essential to learn to read and write with the media. The same convictions have been affirmed by UNESCO: for the information society to be a pluralist, inclusive and participatory society, it is more than ever necessary to provide all citizens, and in particular young people, the skills to know how to decipher information, take the necessary distances for a critical analysis, use it and be themselves producers of contents. I agree!

I agree with Henry Jenkins, and I liked the way he made comparison through the history. The access to information is much easier, but there is too much information online. Sometimes the amount of information and possibilities make young man confused, and many prefer to stay aside, that`s one problem. I think that the first thing for the teacher is to teach students to surf through internet safely and wisely. After that, we can help children to start some action in school, and then local community. That way they can see on the local level participation. It is better to start with baby steps, but we shouldn`t discourage them to start some bigger idea, or join the bigger movement.
Yes, I think that it makes it more easy to participate, but the filtering ideas, information and aims are skills the schools should scaffold them with.

I think he defines very well the crucial role that we as teacher have. Growing up is a process where adults and young people have a common path to treat together.Nobody must be left behind: digital media can play a crucial role in education if they are used critically and if they lead to a creative and critical approach to life,They are an important part of our daily life .The worst thing that we as adults can do is to leave them out of school. If supported by an innovative methodological approach to education they can surely be " part of broader participatory culture – in formal education, as well. In turn, this may lead to broader civic engagement among young people"

In a culture of copy and paste is also important to teach students that they have to mention the autor of the creation if they were not the authors.

Teaching Media Literacy supports a participatory culture at local, national and global levels. Students effectively become digital writers and can be supported to share their opinions on issues to new audiences but also to be exposed to new perspectives and possibilities to inform their own thinking. Participatory cultures develop and enhance critical thinking skills. They learn that their contribution matters. Media Literacy informs students of their online responsibilities . In the creation and participation in vlogs, blogs, websites, interactions with forums and online collaboration students become more aware of the concepts of copyright and plagiarism. ICT is the main way in which students engage with others. Media Literacy skills will afford students the opportunity to collaborate and participate responsibly and safely.

II believe it is increasingly necessary to increase the awareness and digital "wisdom" of young people, first of all by defining the terms of a new digital literacy to be integrated in the curriculum, in consideration of the growing weight of participatory culture and learning informal.

It is therefore a matter of encouraging our students towards a more critical evaluation of online content: It is not a question of determining the "real facts" as much as understanding how the political, economic and social context shapes any text, like any text it can be adapted for different social purposes, and as no text is neutral or necessarily of "superior quality" compared to another. So we teachers are called to propose activities that increase the ability to retrieve information, added to "critical thinking" necessary to formulate informed opinions on the retrieved information and awareness on validity and completeness of internet sources, but above all the consequent social and political impacts.

It is also important for making us be involved in our community and the big community, the continent or the planet. We can do this more responsible, more informed, more effective.

Dr Jenkins offers a very persuasive and optimistic view of the role of media literacy in leading to a participatory culture. He also indicates how important it is not to leave any kids behind in the natural development from playing around with media, as he sees it, to becoming aware of how to become a good citizen. This is a strong endorsement of the fact that kids don't need adults or teachers to snoop behind them but to watch their backs in a protective way. Teachers should be able to encourage this progression in schools during lesson time.

Media Literacy can be widely used in order to reinforce communication between people with a common goal. In Mexico during the earthquake disaster last year the population of the city were instantly mobilized through a big quantity of groups in different social media which led to rescue groups, donation of food and social support. One specific example in my city Queretaro, was a group of Pokemon Go players, which organized a donation event with all the players and communities they knew, they actually drove the donations directly to the Mexico city and posted pictures during the trip (since there was a common distrust feeling towards the government).
