During the Archean Era, the earth was not comprised of oxygen. Oxygen was only found in water, and only reached the atmosphere through photosynthesis from microscopic organisms called cyanobacteria. Organisms, that through complex chemical reactions, transformed carbon-containing molecules into living cells/organisms that did not need oxygen to live.

Over time, photosynthetic organisms produced enough oxygen that reacted with the methane in the atmosphere. After about 300 million years, the oxygen that the photosynthetic bacteria had been making built up in the atmosphere to oxidize the iron found in rocks and soil.

Plants began to become firmly established on earth. Great forests grew on the land and giant swamps filled low-lying areas. As these great masses of plants died, they became buried and were out of contact with oxygen. Because of this, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere dropped making the world cooler. After millions of years, the buried remains of these plants were turned into coal after years and years or heat and pressure was applied to them.

The Earth was much warmer during this era. Ice caps were small or absent, winters were warmers, palm trees grew as far North as Canada, and forests of dawn redwood thrived near the North Pole. With these warmer climates, living animals were able to thrive and live in what we now consider to be polar regions.
