The surface of the earth was molten and as it cooled it formed an atmosphere from the gases that were spewed out from volcanoes.

Oxygen was only found in water, and only reached the atmosphere through photosynthesis from microscopic organisms called cyanobacteria. Great forests grew on the land and giant swamps filled low-lying areas. As these great masses of plants died, they became buried and were out of contact with oxygen. Because of this, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere dropped making the world cooler.
