After Napoleon Bonaparte invaded he established a "Pup-Estate," called the Kingdom of Italy in 1805. After that people began to like the idea of unifying. After Napoleon lost the battle of waterloo, the kingdom of Italy split into 3 different pieces. 1848 was knows as "The year of revolutions" All different parts of the country made allies with different countries and went to war and declared revolutions on each other. Ending slavery and Napoleon got his "feelings hurt." By the middle of the 17th century, the French had convinced many of those buccaneering captains to give up their pirating and settle on the island. Ideas like liberty, freedom, and self-determination were hot stuff in the late 18th century. Few places in the world relied so heavily on slave labor as Saint-Domingue, France's most profitable colony. Slaves made up nearly 90% of Saint-Domingue's population, and in 1789 they couldn't help but hear about the revolution underway in France. When the slaves rebelled it led to TWO revolutions. A nationalistic war against France masterminded by the “Iron Chancellor” Otto von Bismarck. The ceremony took place in the palace of Versailles outside Paris, rather than in Berlin. Before 1871 Germany had always been a motley collection of states sharing little more than a common language. The prospect of unifying them was as distant and disparaged as a United States of Europe is today. von Bismarck was appointed Minister-President of that country in 1862, he aimed to restore Prussia as a great European power. He vastly improved the military for which Prussia would become famous. Early in 1862 Victor Emmanuel again persuaded Garibaldi to lead a revolutionary expedition, this time to attack Austria in the Balkans.  He then decided to use this army to attack the Papal States. Garibaldi led one final campaign in 1870–71, when he assisted the French Republic against Prussia. Again he distinguished himself, though on a small scale, and he was subsequently elected a member of the French National Assembly at Bordeaux. During the last decade of his life he was crippled by rheumatism and by his many wounds. In 1803, when Napoleon declared his intention to reintroduce slavery Dessalines and other black and mulatto Dessalines and other black and mulatto leaders rose in rebellion!
