Tie Breaker by Addison Whalen

Tie Breaker is a politically-charged, queer alt-rock trio in St. John’s, Newfoundland, who uses music to confront social justice issues. Started out of College of the North Atlantic’s Applied Music program, alumni Addison Brooklyn, Jamie Reid and Sara Benoit came together to write their first original song, ‘Free the Witch’, in response to other local band’s misogynist song lyrics. They played in seven shows together at CNA, during one of which they debuted a live acoustic version of ‘Free the Witch’, and now plan to record their first ep. They have successfully played live shows and recorded a podcast as a vocal/piano/bass trio, but are looking for like-minded guitarists to join to shift to a heavier sound. While LGBTQIA2S+ activism is at the forefront of the band’s image, they are currently making efforts to raise awareness as well as funds for the people of Palestine.

Jamie Reid

Jamie Reid (he/they) is a bassist and songwriter from St. John’s, Newfoundland who brings a lot of passion and energy to Tie Breaker. Jamie graduated the Applied Music at College of the North Atlantic with their bandmates in 2025. They are committed to using music to empower the voices of marginalized communities. They enjoy writing narrative music influenced by the perspective of minority groups. They are excited to be able to share proceeds from Tie Breaker with charities and organizations that will make a tangible difference in communities, and to create music that will connect with and uplift those who need it, as well as help educate those who are privileged and have power.

Sara Benoit

Sara Benoit (she/they/he) is the lead singer of Tie Breaker. She graduated the Applied Music Program in 2025, at College of the North Atlantic and has performed in numerous venues around the St. John's area. Sara has been an advocate for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness since she was a child. She uses her voice and the music she creates with her band to spread the messages she believes in.

Addison Brooklyn

Addison Brooklyn is a 2025 graduate from the Applied Music program at College of the North Atlantic. She is a multi instrumental musician and songwriter from Newfoundland, Canada. She has a passion for using music a way of advocating for mental health and breaking the silence during times of injustice. She is exciting to be drumming and playing piano with a group of people who use their platform to support minority groups and give many a voice through the arts.

Where it all started: Three friends who were tired of the misogyny that surrounded not only the local scene but the entire world. This demo would not only leave their practice room but make it onto the stage. Free the Witch will be included in their upcoming EP, titled 'Coven'
