- Hitchcock argues that while voyeurism is in poor taste, it is also a natural and widespread aspect of the human condition.

- The film argues that living in a community is no protection against loneliness
- Many of the characters are isolated and unhappy.
- The film shows that loneliness comes from within; people can be just as lonely in a crowd as they are in a relationship.
- Jeff is socially isolated by his accident
- The end of the film supports this with each of the apartments given a sense of closure
- The film demonstrates the problems with community living and the benefits of community involvement

It was a sexist era before the modern women’s movement made its mark. Both men and women were constrained by cultural expectations.
- Hitchcock suggests that marital discontent is inevitable as newlywed bride morphs into a nagging wife 
- Women are valued for their beauty rather than their skills or intelligence
Lisa may be extremely successful but her role does not command Jeff’s respect
- Magazines symbolise the divide between the passive feminine world and the active masculine world. The magazine Jeff works for covers news, current affairs and global politics. Jeff is in control taking the pictures.
- The Thorwald case casts Lisa in a new role and allows her to enter Jeff’s world. This leads to a reversal of gender roles
- The lines between what men and women can and cannot do become blurred. 
- Jeff is so emasculated by the end of the film that he can no longer object to Lisa’s presence in his life.
