As someone of Asian heritage, I know there are stereotypes that many believe about asians as a whole. Yet, many of these stereotypes are not true and stem from one specific culture. The people that practice the stereotype are such a small portion of the asian population but the stereotypes are applied to more than 4.5 billion people. A single story is just a viewpoint, story, etc. that really only shows what an outside or just a single viewpoint sees something. For example, many Americans see Mexicans as people just trying to sneak into America and steal our jobs and use our healthcare system. With single stories there is some element of truth to them, that's why many people believe in them. That being said sometimes the single stories are not entirely false, they are just incomplete. The single stories create a bias towards the group that it is targeting, which causes division and nothing really positive. Many people have their own perspective on whatever culture, but once they see other prospective, their initial prospective changes. I find that the more people learn about different cultures from theirs, people become less ignorant and more educated on cultural traditions. Additionally there was one sentence from the speech that really stuck with me "A single story can create stereotypes, but it's not the full story". Many people just assume things about people solely based on stereotypes. But the truth is stereotypes don't apply to all people.
