He was raised in a frontier village. At only 11 years old, Mark Twain's father died of pneumonia.  His father was a successful lawyer and had an impact on his life. After his father died, Clemens worked as a store clerk. Shortly after, he also worked as a delivery boy. Clemens the searched something bigger by becoming an apprentice to become a compositor. Clemens moved to St. Louis, Chicago, New York City and Philadelphia as a printer. He then was a steamboat driver on the Mississippi River. Clemens discovered the pen name mark Twain from his time on the ship. Twain had an incredible imagination and used that imagination to create elaborate stories. Twain also had built on a progressive mindset for his era that tackled issues like racism.  Mark Twain first caught recognition for writing after writing "Jim Smiley and his Jumping Frog" in 1865. His first bestseller was called "Innocence Abroad" and was published in 1869. Mark Twain was able to be remarkable in stories, essays, lectures and books which helped to grow American literature.  Twain also received honorary degrees from establishment like Oxford and became one of "America's first celebrities". He was able to travel around the country and lecture in front of big crowds. I believe Mark Twain was a hero for Art and Literature with his expanded and yet distinct imagination.
