Making of Groups

Make of groups can be sort of tricky. You want to have students within the group that are compatible and share common situations. Before group sessions start and as the counselor gets the permissions slips, the counselor would go through a screening process to determine where they belong. The screening process can include the rapport they already have with the students, asking teachers and staff members, or just simply having those relationships with the students.

https://www.schoolcounselor.org/asca/media/asca/Webinars/GetYourGroupOnHandouts.pdf

In this particular stage, it will require students to vulnerable. Some students may not be keen to opening up. Some engage in avoidance behaviors, or show signs of uncertainty, resistance, and perhaps even hidden agendas,” (Sink, Edwards, & Eppler, 2012, p. 93). However, this session is mainly geared towards students who lacks social behavior and suffers with mental issues. The goal here is to have students build trust among themselves. Building a professional rapport is one thing, but having students work and understand each other requires much attention when there are more than one client. Its a good form for them to work on his or her social skills.

It is important that as a school counselor making the students feel comfortable and providing a safe environment is a priority when managing groups. Ice Breakers are a simple activity that can be used during the first few sessions just to break down any barriers that could be present before getting into the depth of the reasoning behind the sessions. Building a rapport between students and counselor is an ideal move for smooth sessions. Finding appropriate activities for the students to participate in will make the small group sessions easier to understand and more engaging for students.

It is important to educate our students on everything bullying. From how to identify it to the appropriate actions needed to respond. Training school staff and students to prevent and address bullying can help sustain bullying prevention efforts over time (stopbullying.gov). Teaching students the different types of bullying will allow for them to be able to differ between certain situations. Teaching students to intervene when bullying is taken place is crucial for eliminating it from occurring within a school.

Music is another form of expression. High school students are more prone to music and in some cases can be a exit ticket from reality. By creating a session or an activity, this can give our students to express vocally and he or she will not be interrupted. As counselors, we believe in giving our students the floor to speak and express, but we want them to be open and creative. “The principles of hip-hop are rooted in giving voice to the oppressed and resisting oppressive systems, political advocacy, vibrant youth expression, and raising public conscious and awareness. The ability to tell one’s story from a strength-based perspective, which allows youth to reframe the narrative that has been told to them or they often believe themselves, is critical to both healing and development (Chesman, 2018).”

This activity focuses on both mental and creative aspect of our students. We believe it's a good way for them to express themselves. By creating art, it can be used as documentation as well communicate with other stakeholders about the students progress. Adolescents often wrestle with emotional issues that they are unable to fully articulate. Using art therapy as a vehicle to allow them to open up in a safe and trusting environment is often a particularly effective way to communicate with them (Helena, 2014).

After doing a quick check in, the counselor would go into what is bullying and what it could possibly do to another student. Students need to understand the difference between bullying or just being rude/mean to another person. Attached is the slide show that I sat in on during a group session on bullying at my school.

While we are still in the very first parts of the group sessions, some students may be open to sharing their stories. Of course, the students needs to understand that nothing that is said in group will be leaving the room. As a counselor, I would then get all the group members to sign a contract stating that confidentiality would be kept before, during, and after the group sessions has begun. I have witnessed that when the students start to express and share their emotions, more of the students join in. The is the beginning of the during points of group sessions.

When it comes to Bullying, there are a variety of different forms in which it looks like, from name calling to cyber-bullying. Although it is different it all looks the same and carries somewhat of the same actions. By having the students in the small group session participate in role playing, it will allow them to gain a clear understanding on what it looks like. Students can make connections because they will be put "in the victims shoes." Once the student's have participated in multiple ways that bullying can occur, teaching the appropriate prevention methods will need to follow.

The Impact

" It is recommended that students stick closely to the script when you first start doing role-plays with your students" (Olweus, 2007) . Role playing can benefit a school that is facing a high rate of bullying, by providing students with a vision of the different forms, it has the potential to cause the bullying rate to decrease exponentially. Once the students are aware and they know the proper steps to take to intervene within a situation it will result in fewer circumstances from occurring. Although a school counselors role is to be an advocate for the students, in this situation the school counselor is teaching the students how to be an advocate for themselves.
