The first flash back shows the reader how he had been exposed to poor, rough conditions in the past. When describing the blankets as rough, and worn, the author says how "he was used to conditions like this." Evidence suggests that he was exposed to these rough conditions whilst in prison. This evidence is that his stab wounds were as a result of an "old enemy who had one sworn to get him", which shows that he has most likely been involved in crime.This would result in a prison sentence where he would have been exposed to these conditions.

During this flashback, Choker has to share a blanket with his brother, which is "thin cotton". His brother has taken the whole blanket from Choker as it is quite cold. "Well, I can't mos help it, man. It's cold". From this whole flashback you can tell that they don't live in very good conditions. from  the Apartheid. He is associated with a history of violence. The situation is described as “white as cocaine” which could be seen as a reference to the apartheid era.
