Misunderstandings

In both stories, the couples misunderstood a lot of things. Because of the misunderstandings it then led to death.
First in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet wanted to figure out a way to get out of marrying Paris. She visited Friar Lawrence for help and Friar gave her a plan to take poison that would shut down her body for a while until he sent a letter to Romeo letting him know the plan. Unfortunately it all started to go wrong. Romeo got the news that Juliet was "dead".He believed it and made the decision to commit suicide and die next to her, "I will lie with thee tonight" (5.1.34). He took the poison and Juliet woke up to see him lying next to her dead. She then grabbed a sword that was on the ground and killed herself. In Pyramus and Thisbe, Thisbe made a mistake of thinking the lioness killed Pyramus. In the text it says, "But of a sudden she saw by the light of the moon a lioness. The fierce beast had made a kill; her jaws were bloody and she was coming to slake her thirst in the spring. She was still far way enough for Thisbe to escape but as she fled she dropped her cloak." This quote shows that Thisbe believed the lioness had killed Pyramus. Because of Thisbe's assumption it then made Pyramus believe she was dead because he saw blood and her cloak on the ground. This then made Pyramus kill kimself due to assuming that Thisbe was dead. Once Thisbe saw that Pyramus was actually dead, she then killed herself too.

Lioness + Potion

In these two stories, something causes one lover to assume the other is dead. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet takes a potion to appear dead, so she does not have to marry Paris. Romeo believes she is dead and kills himself. Shakespeare says, "Come, cordial and not poison, go with me

To Juliet’s grave, for there must I use thee." This describes the scene where Romeo gets the poison to kills himself after hearing the news of Juliets death. In "Pyramus and Thisbe," The two lovers were supposed to meet at a tomb, but Pyramus was late. While he was gone a lioness with blood on its mouth from its last kill chased off Thisbe. In the act of running away, Thisbe dropped her cloak. When Pyramus arrives to see a lioness with a bloody mouth and his lover's cloak, he assumes she is dead and stabs himself. Ovid writes, "He lifted up from the trampled dust what was left of the cloak and kissing it again and again carried it to the mulberry tree. “Now,” he said, “you shall drink my blood too.”He drew his sword and plunged it into his side."

Meeting in Secret

In both stories, there are two lovers who can't see each other so they have to meet in secret just to see each other. In "Pyramus and Thisbe" they decided they would sneak away to be together and be free but had a bad outcome. In "Romeo and Juliet" after Romeo got banned from Verona after Juliet awoken from deep sleep they would sneak away to a different city and be together but it didn't work out that way. In the story "Pyramus and Thisbe" they wanted to be together so bad that they found a chink in the wall to communicate but they had to talk secretly. The quote, "Our two young people discovered it and through it they were able to whisper sweetly back and forth." shows how much they wanted to be together. In "Romeo and Juliet" Romeo sneaks into Juliets home to see her and the quote, " I would not for the world saw thee here" shows how she would do anything to keep Romeo with her. Also sneaking out can result in danger the quote, " How cadets thou hither tell me, and wherefore?/ The orchard walls are High and hard to climb,/ If any kinsmen find thee here" in this quote Juliet is worried about Romeo's danger with her family hating him. In "Pyramus and Thisbe" the quote, "He never doubted that he knew all. Thisbe was dead. He had let his love, a tender maiden, come alone to a place full of danger, and not been there first to protect her." shows how sneaking out leads to danger.

Rebellion

In both stories, rebellion is a major concept. To begin, in Romeo and Juliet the two lovers are aware of their parents' feud and decide to rebel against them by getting married in secret. Even though both of them knew their families would get mad, that didn't stop them from doing what they wanted. In the play Romeo says, " Is she a Capulet?

O dear account! My life is my foe’s debt." With this quote, the reader can infer that there is some type of disagreement between the two families which forbids them from being together. By getting married, they defy their parents' major rule of never marrying in the opposing family. In "Pyramus and Thisbe" they were always taught to love but not romantically. The text says, "Growing up thus side by side they learned to love each other. They longed to marry, but their parents forbade." In this story, the two lovers grew together as neighbors and friends, and as time went by they began to fall in love. Even though they weren't allowed to be together, that didn't stop them from meeting. The rebellious teens in both stories went behind their parents' backs by defying their rules and morals. In both stories the pair of lovers rebelliously fall in love and meet in secret which leads to their downfall.
