Hitler annexed the part with most ethnic Germans as well as some of the parts they lost during the first world war. the Germans tried their new war tactic the blitzkrieg and on sept. 17 the Russians lunched their attack on Poland and the Baltic states as well as parts of Finland. Finland resisted   even though they were out gunned and out numbered. the Russians suffered heavy losses due to gorilla tactics and  a very experienced sniper called the white death, but they eventually won. after the France and the United Kingdom declared war they positioned their troops on the Maginot line, but nothing happened. after a while of nothing from both sides, Germany moved and annexed Denmark and invaded Norway. in a few hours, Denmark fell and after two months eventually Norway fell. The Germans started to build bases so they could lunch attacks on the united kingdom (air and sea).

Hitler annexed the western half of Poland. 16 days later on September 17, 1939, Stalin sent Soviet troops to the eastern half of Poland. Stalin then went to the Baltic countries, all but Finland fell without a struggle. They were only able to defeat Finland because of their sheer number of forces. After France and Britain declared war on Germany they stationed their troops along the Maginot Line. They expected fighting right away but the 2 sides were at a standstill.
