Similar to Rhode’s article, Shilpa Madan, Shankha Basu, Sharon Ng, et al., professors and business employees, state “In the domain of beauty, the motivation to conform to societal norms may lead to heightened self-discrepancy between the ideal beauty standards revered by the society and how beautiful women perceive themselves to be. This may prompt consumers with a stronger interdependent self to use different means to reduce this feeling of self-discrepancy, such as readily available appearance-enhancing tools and products” (Madan, Ng et al.). The quote suggests that consumers who have low self-confidence levels are willing to purchase and use products that contain potentially detrimental ingredients.

Women are less satisfied with their appearance than with any other important life dimension but financial success. As subsequent discussion suggests, much of the reason lies in the ridicule, shame, guilt, and discrimination that social pressures impose” (Rhode).

Society pressures people to purchase or find interest with products that contain ingredients that can harm an individual.

Women are afraid to not buy these products as they are afraid of standing out.
