My topic is rocks and the many purposes they have in Inuit life and culture. Taking the kids out on the land to explore and find rocks with unique shapes shows how Inuit used and still use rocks to build the unique Inuit symbol called Inukshuk.

Once we collect a bunch of rocks that we have choosen, we would bring them back to the classroom.

The additional activity that connect to this topic is creating a craft. The kids could all participate in creating their own unique Inuit symbol the “ Inukshuk. This would be a great way to give them a hands on learning experience while explaining the meaning and purpose of the Inukshuk in Inuit life and culture as they construct it.

Vanissa

Topic: Tundra Flowers

During the summer, we always take the opportunity to bring the children outside for a walk. Sometimes we go for a walk in the tundra where children can explore and see some flowers and other interesting nature things that they can find. Before going outside, I will read the book ‘’A walk on the tundra’’, by Rebecca Hainnu and Anna Ziegler. I will also prepare a sticky tape card and an individual zip bags for them, so they can collect or stick the small items they find like flowers, leaves and so much more. This activity gives them the real experience and helps them feel more connected to nature. This will also teach them to appreciate what they have around them and respect for the environment.

After coming from outdoor walk, children can do additional activity like flower collage using the items that they collected. This will help them connect to what they observed outside and reflect on their experience.

Freda

I picked Raven as something in nature that kids can explore because everyday kids screaming “look bird flying” and running to the window to see the bird outside.I decided to bring the kids outside to look and see the Raven fly and eat something. Ask them to count how many are they in the sky flying and what is the colour of the bird. I asked 2 year old,” Is the Raven flying or running?” She said “not flying ,running(silly smile)”.After we play and explore outside, I come up with this art activity. I created my art and show them. I brought also our Mommy and baby Raven stuffy. The best age group of this craft are ages 4-5. We tried also 2-3 (it was fun but very challenging) and 3-4 needs little help and guide. All the kids are very happy and super proud of what they created. Kids loves to be outside. The more they are expose to nature, the more they gonna improve in all their developmental skills.

-Mila

~My topic is snowflakes, and during the winter when its snowing outside, I’d have paper, fabric or felt ready preferably black to see the snow flakes better, have a piece given to each child and have them collect snowflakes and observe the snowflakes, ask them questions about what sizes they see, or if they’re same or not, etc.

~An additional activity after playing outside with the snowflakes would be, have the children draw out what kind of snow flakes they have seen and what sizes they seen. Another activity I would do is have printed out templates of snowflakes, cut out the odd parts and have the glue on tissue paper to make stained glass snowflakes to hang on our window.

Caryn

Fishing

Fishing is a relaxing activity and it teaches patience. During summer time my kids loves the river and when we go there for walks and picnics they ask about the fishermen. What they are doing and how are they catching the fish. Fishing in Nunavut is a year round activity and fish can be eaten in different ways cooked or dried. In this activity i will play the fishing episode from Anaana’s tent to hook the kids and explain the fishing process before we go outside. Connecting “The great fishing Derby book by Alex Ittimangnaq” which we would have read during circle. In Anaana’s tent they tell a story of Ukaliq & Kalla when they go ice fishing. I will then tell the kids we will go ice fishing outside by digging holes and using sticks pretend we are fishing. We will be using plastic fish from our shark bite game. I will then ask them to roll like a fish since it has no legs and can’t walk.
