The Shallows Debate - 4B by Ms. Doc

As students in the inner circle debate, continue a digital discourse of your own on padlet. React to what students say in the inner circle and form your own arguments. You can also react to one another on the Padlet. This is a graded assignment, so be sure to participate often and appropriately. Students leaving inappropriate or off-task remarks will receive an LS.

I find that students and colleagues create fewer original thoughts and instead paraphrase others' thoughts that they found on the internet when making claims. Many people are now afraid to take risks with forming original thought because they are concerned they do not have the "right" answer.

Deep reading has become less common on the internet because it harbors almost anything we can think of. Most of us have many interests that we can all explore in one place unlike a book where you would have to get up to get different topics, now we can can be bombarded with it all in a few clicks. All our interests in one place. That's why kahoots don't work because kids will do what they want not what they may need to do.

Society as whole is created and formulated to be efficient. That's also the reason clocks and keeping track of time was created. The Internet is just another tool like clocks to make society more efficient as a whole, but that is not always true. Nuclear power was created for a renewable energy source, but its purpose was twisted and distorted by humanity, who then made the atomic bomb from the same source. Ultimately, the Internet should be used in responsible manner and that is the only way to stop its psychological and biological effects.

Respectfully, I do think social media is "fake life." You can create an alternate reality that has no resemblance to your actual life. Granted, some people have profiles that are more accurate representations of their lives than others; however, the ability to manipulate profiles cannot be overlooked. On Instagram, you may see a perfectly filtered photo of people smiling and having a "wonderful time." Someone may feel jealous that they weren't at the event that the photo captures. If they actually went to that event though, there is a strong possibility that it was not as enjoyable as the photo made it out to be. I have found that events I go to that I don't upload pictures of are more memorable and enjoyable because I decided to live in the moment. I wasn't fretting over what other people would think of my moment.

For example, Carr says that the internet is used for "self-expression, for shaping personal and public identity, and for cultivating relations with others", this is proof that the internet can be a platform for expressing yourself and can be a gateway to finding people like you. The internet has many positive points but, it also can have devastating effects, like cyberbullying which can lead to suicide, which is awful. So we have to be careful how we use the internet.

I agree that the internet has made life much easier for us. For example, whenever I get the chance to type out my homework, I take it. It is far easier to click little keys as opposed to applying pressure to paper with a pencil and feeling that overwhelming cramp in your hand. Unfortunately, people abuse the ease of the Internet though. Using keys and quick wifi connections should not be taken advantage of. If you can type better than you can write, that's great. The problem arises when people use the internet to make actual deep thinking processes easier for them. If someone chooses to look up a math problem without actually working it out, they are abusing the Internet.

What Alex is saying is reminding me of Carr's anecdotes about clocks. After the proliferation of clocks, it literally changed the ways of life. Instead of living by the changes of the sun and moon in the sky, people started to live around regimented and sectioned schedules. After reading about life before clocks, I was really trying to imagine life without them. I live by the clock; it guides my every day decisions. When I have to reset my alarm clock, it cannot be a minute faster or slower than the actual time because every minute counts to me. Without the clock, I would be frustrated that the world wasn't all on the same exact page. I like that it brings unity.
